The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation is seeking a research assistant for a 2-year position within the ongoing research project Kagome Architectures. The project focuses on generating fundamental knowledge and novel construction methods for realising free-form timber grid shells in architecture employing the Kagome weaving technique.
The vacant research assistant is affiliated with the Institute of Architecture and Technology, and employment will happen on 1 February 2026 or as soon as possible hereafter.

The position

The position as Research Assistant will consist of research, fabrication and dissemination activities. Teaching and other tasks may occur to a limited extent.
Your duties will include:
Qualifications
You must hold a master’s degree (MSc/MA) in Architecture. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate competencies in research scholarship (e.g: lead author in at least one peer-reviewed conference or journal paper), competencies in Kagome weaving (both digital design development and fabrication), timber compression and can demonstrate experience in planning, fabrication and assembly of large-scale installations.

Salary and terms of employment
The terms of pay and employment will be in accordance with the agreement in force between the Danish Ministry of Finance and a number of organisations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academic staff in public service. A qualification allowance will be negotiable, depending on your skills and experience.
The position will also be filled in accordance with the applicable job structure for artistic and Academic staff at the Royal Danish Academy og Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design, Conservation; Aarhus School of Architecture and Kolding School of Design – Ministerial Order No. 1190 of 21 August 2023.
This is a full-time position with an average of 37 working hours per week.
The position expires without further warning after 2 years of employment.

Your duties will include:
- Leading development of a timber compression process for producing solid timber elements capable of being interlaced.
- Leading assembly of solid timber weave prototypes.
- Integrating results from digital design and material characterisation research tracks and equally ensuring that results from timber compression and large-scale fabrication are effectively shared within the research team.
- Leading the planning, preparation and execution of large-scale installations at domestic and international venues.
Qualifications
You must hold a master’s degree (MSc/MA) in Architecture. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate competencies in research scholarship (e.g: lead author in at least one peer-reviewed conference or journal paper), competencies in Kagome weaving (both digital design development and fabrication), timber compression and can demonstrate experience in planning, fabrication and assembly of large-scale installations.
We also expect that you:
- are capable of working effectively within a team context
- have strong communication and coordination skills, both written and verbal
- are self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple ongoing activities
- demonstrate a high degree of precision and attention to detail in both research and fabrication
- are open to interdisciplinary collaboration and willing to engage across fields such as architecture, engineering, and material science
- are able to travel for project execution and dissemination activities when required
