PhD Stipendium in Neurorehabilitation
One PhD stipend is available at the Department of Neurology, Aalborg University Hospital. The PhD stipend will be open for appointment from 1 April 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job description
In collaboration with the Center for Neurotechnology and Rehabilitation, the Faculty of Medicine at Aalborg University and the Center for Clinical Research at Regional Hospital North Denmark and the Department of Neurology at Aalborg University Hospital carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching, and dissemination within stroke neurorehabilitation. The Stroke Unit at the Department of Neurology services the entire North Denmark Region with about 3000 patients suspected of stroke admitted per year. Acute treatment includes thrombolysis and thrombectomy, as well as access to a full-service stroke unit including access to neurointensive care and neurosurgery. Following acute stroke therapy, our stroke rehabilitation is organized on several levels: early discharge with neurorehabilitation at home (minor stroke), admission for local rehabilitation (moderate stroke) and admission for regional rehabilitation (moderate to major stroke). The rehabilitation is patient-centered in an interdisciplinary collaboration (clinicians, therapists, and engineers) with secure development, validation and implementation of new neurotechnological tools to support the existing rehabilitation methods (e.g., state-of-the-art technology for rehabilitation of gait in stroke patients and brain computer interface technologies for enhancing neuroplasticity and functional recovery post stroke). The goal of this Ph.D. project is to investigate and validate these new neurotechnological tools compared to existing rehabilitation methods. This involves the establishment of a neurorehabilitation database. Historical data from patients with existing neurorehabilitation methods and new neurotechnological tools to support the existing rehabilitation methods will be compared and correlated to clinical data from the acute admission and findings on magnet resonance imaging (MRI). An important aspect of this Ph.D. project is to predict the response to neurorehabilitation depending on clinical data and MRI-findings for further adjustment of the neurorehabilitation methods to improve clinical outcomes.
Prospective applicants for this PhD proposal should have the following qualifications:
- M.D. degree in medicine.
- Special interest in stroke and neurorehabilitation.
- IT-experience in programming, development and management of databases.
- Knowledge of machine learning, computer vision and human-machine interfacing is an advantage.
- A creative mindset and curiosity to research and develop new solutions in an international environment with highly skilled colleagues.
- Good communication and excellent organizational skills.

PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order no. 1039 of August 27, 2013, on the PhD Program at the Universities.
According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of evaluation.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that after the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
