One PhD position in bioorganic chemistry is available in the group of Professor Jasmin Mecinovic at the Department of Physics and Chemistry, SDU.

Starting date of the position will be 1 October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Methyltransferases comprise a large family of enzymes that catalyse methylation of proteins, DNA, RNA and small molecule metabolites. Due to their diverse biological roles, it is important to identify and characterise all members of the methyltransferase superfamily and their natural substrates.
As a PhD student, you will work on an Independent Research Fund Denmark-funded project aimed at developing innovative chemical tools for functional understanding of human protein histidine methyltransferases. The project will focus on development of novel labelling tools, using specially designed small molecules and peptide probes. You will apply modern bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology approaches, ranging from synthesis and peptide synthesis to enzyme assays and protein labelling studies, in investigations of biologically important histidine methylation.
The research in Mecinovic group applies chemical principles and techniques to understand the underlying molecular origin of fundamental biomolecular processes that play essential roles in human health and disease. The group is international, cross-disciplinary and gender-balanced. The successful candidate will receive excellent training, mentoring and career development support.
Specific Requirements
- MSc in chemistry;
- experience with organic chemistry;
- experience with peptide or protein research;
- strong motivation and interest in working at the interface between chemistry and biology;
- excellent skills in written and spoken English.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU and is located in Odense. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is a department focused on basic research. Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
