Welcome to Connectivity & Embedded Software In the Connectivity & Embedded Software (CESW) department, we are about 150 colleagues who work together to deliver embedded software and firmware for our hearing instruments. In your new position you will be part of the DevEx team, currently counting 8 colleagues. The working environment is informal and humorous, yet also deeply committed to high-quality results.
The DevEx team improves the developer experience within CESW. We want to provide a highly effective development environment for our users, who primarily are software engineers working with firmware development under Linux. This in short means providing great tooling, robust automation, and removing any kind of friction within the development process.
The CESW department is a part of Device Software in R&D. One of the things that makes working in
[xxxxx] R&D so interesting is that we have everything under one roof — including designing our own chipset, firmware and hardware. We have our own production facilities and our own sales organization. In other words, if you have a question, the answer is literally only a few steps away.
Improving developer experience — through great workstations Our users build advanced low-power, audio-enabled devices that must meet medical device standards. To do that efficiently, they rely on a stable, secure, and predictable Linux workstation setup. In this role, you will help ensure that engineers can focus on development — not on workstation issues.
You will be working on improving developer experience within:
- Provisioning, configuring, and maintaining Linux workstations (primarily Debian-based and NixOS) for developers and power users.
- Standardizing workstation setups using Nix (e.g., packages, dev shells, reproducible configurations) to make environments consistent and easy to restore.
- Hardware lifecycle support: imaging, onboarding, replacements, troubleshooting of peripherals (docks, monitors, USB devices), and performance tuning.
- Automation of common workstation operations (e.g., setup scripts, configuration management, documentation and self-service guides).
- Collaboration with engineers on Linux subsystems, developer tooling needs, and continuous improvements of the workstation platform.
Your profile You have a practical technical background and enjoy combining structured operations with great user support. You communicate clearly, document what you do, and you are comfortable working in a technical environment where Linux is the default.
Some of the skills we are looking for are listed below. We do not expect you to have experience in all of them, but it would be great if you are curious to learn more about them.
- Linux desktop administration and troubleshooting (e.g., Debian/Ubuntu) and/or NixOS.
- Nix: package management, dev shells, environments; ideally Nix flakes and basic NixOS configuration.
- Hardware troubleshooting for workstations: storage, graphics, drivers, docking stations, monitors, USB devices, and networking.
- Scripting and automation (Bash/shell; Python is a plus).
- Basic networking concepts (DNS, DHCP, VPN, certificates) relevant for workstation environments.
- Using Git for configuration/scripts and working with reviews/changes.
- Service mindset and structured ticket-based work (incident/request/change).
