Our Landscape Department at BIG’s Copenhagen headquarters is looking for an experienced and talented Urban Designer to join our Copenhagen office. Working within a vibrant, multidisciplinary team of urban design, landscape and architectural professionals, you will play a key role in concept generation and the design development of urban strategies and masterplans across a wide range of scales and geographies—helping translate big ideas into coherent, buildable and compelling urban proposals.

Our Landscape Department at BIG’s Copenhagen headquarters is looking for an experienced and talented Urban Designer to join our Copenhagen office. Working within a vibrant, multidisciplinary team of urban design, landscape and architectural professionals, you will play a key role in concept generation and the design development of urban strategies and masterplans across a wide range of scales and geographies—helping translate big ideas into coherent, buildable and compelling urban proposals.
Key Responsibilities
Concept Design & Spatial Strategy
- Generate and develop strong masterplan concepts—translating narrative and ambition into clear spatial logic and place-making strategies.
- Explore multiple design options for districts, streets, public spaces, waterfronts, and open-space networks; test alternatives and support decision-making through iteration.
- Contribute to the development of frameworks and principles around density, land use, movement, public realm, and identity—while maintaining BIG’s design quality.
Design Development & Integration
- Support the integration of architecture, public realm, mobility, ecology/green systems, and infrastructure into coherent masterplans.
- Develop plans, sections, diagrams, and design guidance that communicate intent clearly and can be advanced through project stages.
- Contribute to technical awareness in urban design (streets, edges, interfaces, public-space performance), coordinating with specialists as needed.
Graphics, Visualization & Communication
- Produce and refine high-quality drawings, diagrams, models, and visualizations to communicate ideas clearly—internally and externally.
- Support reports, presentations, and submission material—ensuring graphic consistency in line with the chosen narrative.
- Participate in internal design reviews and contribute to client-facing workshops and presentations when required.
Collaboration & Delivery Support
- Work closely with architects, landscape designers, engineers, and planning specialists across disciplines to coordinate inputs and align outcomes.
- Support project delivery by responding to feedback efficiently, managing your own tasks and deadlines, and communicating progress and constraints clearly.
- Contribute to planning submissions and stakeholder/authority material where relevant.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong conceptual and spatial design ability, with excellent graphic communication and storytelling.
- Comfortable iterating quickly: generating options, testing ideas, and refining selected directions with clarity and rigor.
- Solid understanding of urban design principles and the fundamentals of technical development (streets/public realm/interfaces).
- Collaborative mindset; able to coordinate across disciplines and contribute positively to a high-performing design culture.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Rhino and the Adobe Suite; additional tools (e.g., Grasshopper and/or GIS) are a plus. Revit experience is beneficial (depending on project needs).
Qualifications & Experience
- 3–7 years of post-qualification experience as an Architect/Urbanist/Designer, with clear urban design and/or masterplanning experience.
- Professional qualifications in Architecture, Urbanism, or Landscape Architecture are valued.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating concept generation, option testing, spatial thinking, and high-quality visuals—ideally across a range of scales.
- Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written).
