A combined position as clinical professor (50%) and as consultant (50%) is vacant at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, Lillebaelt Hospital, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Department of Plastic Surgery, Odense University Hospital respectively. The main place of service will be at the Department of Surgery, Lillebaelt Hospital Vejle, University Hospital of Southern Denmark.

The position is for a 5-year period with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The clinical professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be within plastic surgery, and focus areas could include, yet are not limited to, oncoplastic and breast reconstructive surgery, as well as late sequelae and other aspects of cancer-related plastic surgery. Multidisciplinary collaboration is expected.

Areas of responsibility

The clinical professor will be responsible for consolidating and further developing research in the area of oncoplastic and breast reconstructive surgery at Lillebaelt Hospital Vejle. During the last decade, the department’s research efforts and publication output have increased, and the hospital wishes to strengthen research within the above-mentioned areas further. The clinical professor will be responsible for building a larger and more mature research environment within these areas by recruiting academic staff, obtaining funding, cultivating networks, and by developing and coordinating research strategies with academic staff within and outside the department itself.

The clinical professor will be expected to function part-time at the Department of Plastic Surgery research unit in Odense, in collaboration with Head of Research Professor Jens Ahm Sørensen to participate in and research in the field breast and lymphatic reconstruction. It will furthermore be expected that the clinical professor will support and further develop the scientific collaboration between the Research Unit for Plastic Surgery, Department of Plastic Surgery, Odense University Hospital and the Lillebaelt Hospital.

Additionally, the clinical professor should teach and mentor postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students, as well as maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Also, from 2023 onwards, academic staff at Lillebaelt Hospital provide undergraduate teaching of medical students at the Esbjerg site, and the clinical professor must be willing to contribute if needed. Finally, participation in assessment work and profiling the research area in the public eye will be important tasks.

Research activity, network, and collaboration

The clinical professor will be expected to increase research activity at the research unit and to expand collaboration with other researchers at hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark, at SDU, in the rest of Denmark and abroad.

The clinical position

The clinician will be appointed as consultant at the Department of Plastic Surgery, Odense University Hospital, but with main place of service at the Department of Surgery, Lillebaelt Hospital Vejle, University Hospital of Southern Denmark. The consultant must fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of a consultant in a department of plastic surgery. The Vejle site is dedicated to cancer-related plastic surgery within the areas of breast cancer and skin cancer, but in addition, provides a basic plastic surgery service. Currently, the plastic surgery service is staffed with two other full-time consultants, one part-time consultant, as well as five junior doctors in specialist training.

The consultant will be expected to collaborate on equal terms with the other consultants and to take part in the clinical duties and responsibilities for patients and junior staff, as well as for quality and efficiency of the service. The consultant will be expected to assume clinical responsibility for oncoplastic and breast reconstructive surgery at the Vejle site and must document substantial experience and skills within these areas.

Qualifications

The successful applicant has a PhD or equivalent post-graduate research qualification and must be qualified as a consultant in plastic surgery.

Additionally, the applicant must have substantial skills in both clinical aspects and research within the field of oncoplastic and breast reconstructive surgery. The preferred candidate has demonstrated skills and scientific achievements within this area, is able to motivate, supervise, has proven research management skills, good interpersonal skills,and has visions of how to further strengthen the research unit. The applicant must be able to adopt and abide by the core values of the Lillebaelt Hospital (please see below), and it is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

Danish language skills are not required initially, but must be mastered at the proficiency level C1, at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment.

Clinical specialties and expertise: The department provides plastic surgery at two sites – Odense and Vejle. In Odense, the service is divided into three units: Unit for Plastic Surgery, the Breast Surgery Center, and the University Center for Wound Healing. The department is involved in the following multi-disciplinary services: Head and Neck; Melanoma; Breast Cancer; and Vascular Malformations.

Research Unit for Plastic Surgery OUH

The Research Unit for Plastic Surgery is an integrated part of the Department of Plastic Surgery and is headed by Professor Jens Ahm Sørensen. Main fields of interest are breast cancer, malignant melanoma, oral cancer, skin cancer, sentinel node, lymphedema, Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), post-bariatric surgery, 3-D reconstruction, free microvascular flaps, stem cell research, and wound healing. Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle

The Vejle branch of Lillebaelt Hospital is a designated cancer and specialist hospital, with Oncology serving the entire Southern part of Jutland, and with clinical, imaging, and laboratory services within cancer diagnosis and treatment as well as other specialties. Main areas of cancer treatment and research are colorectal, breast, skin, lung, gynaecology, urology, and haematology. The hospital has strong values and a pervasive culture based on a “The Patient First” approach. The mission of the Department of Surgery is diagnosis and treatment of breast, skin and bowel cancer with a vision of providing unsurpassed patient experiences, logistics and clinical quality.

Plastic Surgery research in Vejle

Head of surgical research at Vejle Hospital is Clinical Professor Hans Bjarke Rahr. Research spans the three clinical tiers breast cancer, skin cancer, and colorectal cancer, each with externally funded postdoc researchers (in breast and colorectal surgery; plastic currently vacant) and 2-3 PhD students (presently, 6 all included). There is a strong multidisciplinary research collaboration within as well as outside the hospital. Main fields of interest are robotic surgery, CME surgery, use of indocyanine green, cancer screening, register studies, skin cancer, socioeconomic inequality, shared decision making, early bowel cancer, telemedicine, breast reconstruction, diagnostic methods and neoadjuvant treatment in breast cancer, and long-term outcomes and sequelae. Researchers from the three tiers collaborate on several of these themes. The department is a member of the ACROBATIC research network, contributing a work package on palliative surgery. The new clinical professor is expected to consolidate and further develop the research environment within the areas of plastic and breast reconstructive surgery.

The Department of Regional Health Research, University of Southern Denmark

The Department of Regional Health Research supports research in relation to the person as a whole, the good life and the more common diseases, makes out a platform for scientists and educators and builds a bridge between University of Southern Denmark, the Region of Southern Denmark, the Region of Zealand, the hospitals in the two regions and the patient. The department focuses on the continuity of patient care across sectors, hospitals, and specialist fields.

The successful applicant for the clinical professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
