We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our interdisciplinary research group dedicated to the study of past climate and ecosystem changes in the marine Arctic. You will join an international and dynamic research group within the Department of Glaciology and Climate at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) where you will be employed in the project “Functional ecosystem changes in the marine Arctic: unravelling climate-biota interactions by hybridization capture of sedimentary ancient DNA (FunCap)”, funded by Danmarks Frie Forskningsfonds. The position will be commencing November 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter for a period of 2 years (24 months).
Job description
A main challenge for the natural sciences today is to predict the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, which offer vital services to society, because our understanding of how species might respond to climate change is insufficient. Within this project, the successful candidate will explore the use of hybridization capture of ancient DNA preserved in marine sediments. By developing a hybridization capture assay with focus on marine, arctic key species, the postdoc will investigate past temporal and spatial trajectories in biotic responses to climate variability off west Greenland over the Holocene-Anthropocene (the past ~11,700 years).
Your qualifications
The appointment will be made based on academic qualifications. The candidate should hold a PhD degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, or related disciplines, and have documented experience in processing and analysing high-throughput sequencing data, with focus on environmental (ancient) DNA, comparative genomics, or transcriptomics. Ideally, you are familiar with marine ecosystems, primer/probe/bait design, or have experience in compiling sequence reference databases. Motivation to perform experiments in the ancient DNA laboratories is of advantage. Good spoken and written English is a requirement and we expect the candidate to publish results in international scientific journals and to present results at international conferences.
Department of Glaciology and Climate
The Department of Glaciology and Climate study both the current and past changes of the Greenland ice sheet and the ocean surrounding it. Past changes (last 10,000 years) in the ice sheet, ocean and biological systems are studied using marine sediment cores applying a broad variety of proxy methods. The current loss of ice from Greenland is studied using a network of climate stations, satellite observations and modeling. Besides doing research, we provide advice to government agencies and the private sector and provide supervision to university students.

An expert academic assessment committee consisting of two internal senior researchers will make an individual evaluation of applicants’ academic qualifications, where candidates are deemed qualified or non-qualified in relation to the position advertised.
