The Department for Media, Design, Education and Cognition at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a 3-year position as PhD in the area of environmental and climate impacts of media habits. The position is located at the Media Studies section in Odense within the research group “Networked Media in Society” and in co-operation with Life Cycle Engineering, Department of Green Technology (TEK) and SDU Citizen Science. Starting date is September 1st, 2023.

At the Department for Media, Design, Education and Cognition we research themes within Media Science, Organisational Communication, Philosophy, Design and Education Sciences, cf. information about the department available here: https://www.SDU.dk/en/om_SDU/institutter_centre/mdle

The candidate will be part of the SDU Climate Cluster (SCC) interdisciplinary project Media habits and the environment, led by Associate Professor Anette Grønning, Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Professor MSO Morten Birkved, Institute of Green Technology, Faculty of Engineering, focusing on the impacts of media habits on the environment and the dissemination thereof.

The aim of the SCC project is to develop new ways of explaining and illustrating which impacts media habits have on the climate and environment as well as new ways of communicating these challenges. Through a media ethnographical perspective, the project relies on explorative methods, such as observations of and dialogues with citizens (media users) in order to co-create knowledge and sustainable consumption/habit changes. Citizen Science pertains to the inclusion of, contribution from, and reciprocity with citizens in order to achieve sustainable research outcomes. The successful candidate is expected to be able to formulate their own research topic and propose an original research question within the general scope of our project. The PhD candidate can address this issue from different approaches, such as media ethnography, action research, critical discourse analysis, or other media and communication theoretical approaches, methodologically combined with elements from citizen science. Applicants are encouraged to contact Head of Project Anette Grønning to qualify their ideas before submission.

Further information is available from Head of Department Marianne Wolff Lundholt at phone: +45 20550541, email: [email protected]
