The Department of Green Technology (IGT) at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for an assistant professor position in data analysis and management, spatiotemporal analytics and modeling, geo-visualization, material flow analysis, environmental informatics, urban sustainability, renewable energy, industrial ecology, and circular economy.

The position will be placed in the Center for Life Cycle Engineering and is available from July 1st, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

SDU Life Cycle Engineering focuses on education and research contributing to global sustainability. With the announced position, LCE wishes to strengthen the capacity for environmental informatics using big data and geospatial approaches and analysis, emphasizing spatiotemporal dynamics and decision support to relevant stakeholders. The position targets the application of the latest technological developments in computer science and geographic information science to address issues surrounding sustainability, resilience, and social equity in areas that include urban science and renewable energy systems.

Your past research should include modeling data science and geospatial approaches at the industrial ecology/environmental/sustainability science intersection. In addition, your experience should include the application of one or more of the following:

  • Data Analysis and Management
  • Spatiotemporal Analytics
  • Programming in SQL, Python, R, Java, or similar languages
  • Developing and using machine learning and other quantitative methods to integrate, visualize, and extract information from disparate data sources like remote sensing imagery, environmental databases, etc.
  • Handling datasets from heterogeneous sources, large spatial datasets, and databases
  • Material flow analysis
  • Spatial modeling and visualization
  • Urban Sustainability/urban sustainable development
  • Renewable Energy Systems

Experience in one or several of the following will also be valued:

  • Database management software like e.g., Postgresql with PostGIS
  • Application of geographic information systems (GIS) software like e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.
  • Programming experience for handling large spatial datasets
  • Linux Server Maintenance
  • Application for research funding

Responsibilities and tasks:

The candidate will perform research, contribute to the teaching tasks, and share other responsibilities in the department. The candidate will engage in training of the next generation of researchers and environmental engineers and is expected to collaborate with researchers and especially with stakeholders across sectors, including policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and industry. Main activities will include:

  • Teaching future engineers (MSc. courses in GIS, Programming, and supervision) and supervision of doctoral students.
  • Contribution to sustainability and circular economy transition strategies through participation in local regional and European scale research consortiums and research funding applications.

Qualifications:

  • You bring strong expertise and an adequate track record in the research topics listed below.
  • You have an adequate record of active participation in research consortia.
  • You have teaching and supervision experience.
  • You hold a relevant PhD degree.
  • You enjoy working with complex topics using a systems perspective.

Assessment

A panel will assess the qualification of the candidate for the described post based on the submitted material, which should include

  • A Curriculum Vitae and letter of interest.
  • An account of experience in education and outreach, including a teaching portfolio.
  • Relevant diplomas.
  • A list of publications.

The position is limited in time for 3 years.

Conditions of employment

Employment as an assistant professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level and is a 3-year temporary position. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
