A position as professor with a background in molecular biology, bioinformatics, medicine or equivalent, is vacant at the Department of Clinical Genetics, Lillebaelt University Hospital, Vejle and Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU).

The role is divided into 80% academic responsibilities and 20% clinical duties. The clinical responsibilities exclusively involve developing and implementing innovative diagnostic analyses and offering support and assistance for research projects initiated by clinical staff within the department. The position is for a 5-year period with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU, with research facilities at the Department of Clinical Genetics, Lillebaelt University Hospital, Vejle. The position will be focused on human genomics and clinical genetics, with potential areas of emphasis including, but not limited to, Next-Generation Sequencing, Functional Genomics, Epigenomics, Bioinformatics, Computational Genomics, and of cause Genomic Medicine. The expectation is to engage in trans-sectional research and foster collaboration across disciplines.

Areas of responsibility

The professor will be responsible for for initiating, supervising, and publishing research in the field of human genomics and clinical genetics. Developing and expanding the research unit focused on human genomics, as well as establishing innovative collaboration strategies with key stakeholders in personalized medicine, will be a key task for the professor.

In addition, the professor will be involved in teaching and mentoring post-docs, PhD-students, and undergraduate students. It is expected that the professor will cultivate and expand professional networks both nationally and internationally, secure funding for research projects, contribute to assessment activities, and promote the research area to the general public.

The professor is also anticipated to possess a comprehensive understanding of current principles and theories in the field, enabling the professor to serve as an expert consultant both within and outside of the institution.

Research activity, network and collaboration

The professor will play a crucial role in advancing the research strategy and profile, with a particular emphasis on human genomics. Therefore; enhancing research activity, expanding the research unit, and fostering collaborations with researchers from hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark, SDU, other institutions in Denmark, and internationally are key expectations for the professor.

The clinical position

The professor will be responsible for initiating, developing and implementing new diagnostic analyses ensuring that the Department of Clinical Genetics at Lillebaelt University Hospital, Vejle is at the forefront when it comes to offering our patients the best diagnostic tests.

Qualifications

The successful applicant has a background in molecular biology, bioinformatics, medicine or equivalent as well as a PhD or equivalent post-graduate research qualification. Substantial skills in both clinical aspects of personalised medicine and research within the field of human genomics are required. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated skills and scientific achievements in this area, along with the ability to motivate, supervise and manage research.

Good interpersonal skills and a vision for developing and strengthening the research unit in human genomics are essential. Danish language skills are not required initially, but must be mastered at proficiency level C1, at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment.

Employers

The Department of Clinical Genetics specializes in the study, diagnosis, management, and counseling of individuals and families affected by genetic disorders. The department provides counseling to approximately 3500 patients annually, with around 75% of cases related to oncogenetics. It consists of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, laboratory scientists, molecular biologists, and other specialists.

The department's primary goal is to provide comprehensive and personalized care through clinical evaluations, genetic testing, and accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options. Collaboration with other medical specialties ensures comprehensive care for patients with genetic disorders. In addition to clinical services, the Department of Clinical Genetics actively engage and initiates genetic research, collaborating with clinical staff, fellow researchers and other institutions to enhance knowledge, discover genetic markers, and develop improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The Department of Clinical Genetics houses a certified genetic laboratory equipped with advanced technologies and skilled professionals. The laboratory conducts routine analyses such as karyotyping, FISH analyses, MLPA, Pyrosequencing, Sanger sequencing, and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques like Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), and RNA sequencing. The laboratory actively engages in internal and external research projects, utilizing cell culture techniques for tumor cells and performing exome sequencing on circulating tumor DNA. The department provides support and prioritizes the laboratory's research efforts.

The Department of Regional Health Research facilitates research pertaining to the holistic well-being of individuals, the pursuit of a quality life, and the prevalent diseases. It serves as a platform for scientists and educators, establishing a connection between University of Southern Denmark, The Region of Southern Denmark, Region Zealand, the hospitals in the two regions and the patient. The department focuses on the continuity of patient care across sectors, hospitals, and specialist fields.

Salary and terms of employment

The successful applicant for the professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The hospital and the department will provide an annual grant for the professor.
