The Faculty of Theology at UCPH seeks to appoint two researchers for fixed 21-month term post doctoral positions starting on 1 April 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The research will be conducted as part of the research project Writing with the Dead – N.F.S. Grundtvig’s Use of Historical Sources (WWD).

WWDinvestigates how the influential Danish theologian, thinker, and poet N.F.S. Grundtvig worked with textual sources from antiquity to his own day. In addition to the analysis of Grundtvig’s published works, the project group will take advantage of a new research infrastructure called Grundtvig’s Manuscripts Online (GMO). GMO uses the AI-software Transkribus for the text recognition of more than 80,000 unprinted pages from Grundtvig’s hand in his archive at the Royal Danish Library. The research environment and activities

WWD offers a diverse and interdisciplinary research environment, located at the Faculty of Theology affiliated to the section of Church History at the South Campus of UCPH [xxxxx]

Parts of the project will be conducted at other departments at the South Campus and at the Royal Danish Library. Activities will include research, teaching, and dissemination related to Grundtvig’s writings and their genesis and impact. The postdocs are expected to participate in all parts of this work with support from the PIs, Anders Holm, Associate Professor of Church History and Sunes Auken, Associate Professor, Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics.

Position description
We seek scholars who demonstrate a strong motivation and enthusiasm for contributing to our research project. Scholars primarily from Theology or Humanities are encouraged to apply. Of special interest are scholars who want to study Grundtvig’s use of interaction with medieval texts or use of texts from the 18th century.

We seek candidates with the following competencies:

  • A PhD degree preferably in Theology or Humanities
  • Experience in interdisciplinary work
  • Knowledge of Grundtvig’s writings and sources
  • Experience in working with Grundtvig’s archive
  • Proficiency in reading 19th century vernacular Danish
  • Working knowledge with the AI-software Transkribus
  • A strong publication record within the field, or closely related fields

General desirable experience and skills:

  • Curious mindset with experience in working in the interface between theology and literary studies
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, results-oriented and able to work independently and in groups
  • Strong data and text analytical skills and advanced computer skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and good communication skills in general

Place of employment
The project work takes place across the involved faculties at University of Copenhagen, but employment will be at Faculty of Theology, UCPH Some activities will involve travel. For further information about the Faculty of Theology, see [xxxxx]

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for 21 months. Starting date is 1 April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary, pension, and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at DKK 39,200/ approx. 5,200 Euro. Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 18,07 % to your pension fund.

Applicants will primarily be selected based on an overall assessment of how they best match the recruitment needs of the Faculty as described in this advertisement for the post compared with the applicant's research and teaching portfolio as set out in the application, CV incl. a list of publications, and any research/development plan.

The recruitment process
After the application deadline, the Dean selects applicants for assessment on the advice of an Appointment Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed on for assessment.

The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee in order to assess the selected applicants for the post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the Assessment Committee and each applicant has, once the committee has finished its work, the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment related to themselves.

The Appointment Committee may afterwards select candidates for interview.
