Odense M

The Loft group at the Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications from outstanding postdoctoral candidates who are interested in joining our team to develop new rational targeting strategies for adipose tissue. The position is available from 1 December 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter and the employment will run for up to four years. Application deadline: 16 October 2023.

Research project
A significant obstacle for studying adipose tissue (AT) in its natural environment has been the absence of effective targeting systems for the notoriously hard-to-target tissue. In recent years, there have been notable advancements in viral-mediated systems with enhanced tropism for delivery to AT, and novel approaches relying on single cell technologies to rationally design strategies to target cellular subpopulations within a tissue have been described.

In a research project funded by the Lundbeck Foundation, the postdoctoral candidate will apply these principles to develop and test optimized tools for targeting specific cellular subpopulations within AT. The insights gained from this project will provide us with optimized approaches to target specific cell populations within AT, thus facilitating the exploration of their functional roles in the context of metabolic diseases.

The Loft Group
Junior Group Leader Anne Loft is a recipient of a Lundbeck Foundation Fellowship from 2023. Research in the Loft group is particularly focused on understanding how the adipose tissue serves as a critical signalling hub in the context of metabolic diseases, such as MAFLD. For this, we apply single cell genomics technologies on clinical biopsies combined with bioinformatics, and a range of targeting strategies in animal disease models.

As members of the Center of Excellence in Functional Genomics and Tissue Plasticity (ATLAS) a key research focus in the Loft group is understanding cellular diversity and communication determining differential interindividual phenotypic outcomes of obesity.

Research environment
The project will benefit from the highly interdisciplinary expertise in the ATLAS Center of Excellence. The work will primarily be carried out in the Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit, at Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, but may also involve research exchange to collaborating laboratories abroad. The Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit currently hosts eight independent research groups focusing on various aspects of gene regulatory mechanisms controlling cellular identity, differentiation and metabolism. The research unit constitutes an international, ambitious, highly dynamic, and well-equipped working environment. The unit and the department have state-of-the-art facilities for next generation sequencing, single-cell transcriptomics, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, metabolomics, bioimaging and transgenic mouse work. Strategic research alliances exist with Odense University Hospital (OUH).

Qualifications/requirements
We are looking for highly motivated, dedicated, and ambitious scientists with:

  • A PhD degree in Life Science, preferably Molecular Biology, Biomedicine, or Computational Systems Biology
  • Documented expertise in adipocyte biology, mouse models and/or NGS data analysis
  • Certificate in Laboratory Animal Science (EU function ABD or similar) (preferable)
  • Ideally at least one first author publication in a relevant journal in the field
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills and an interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

We offer

  • A three-year and three-months postdoc position in a stimulating and supportive, international research environment
  • Access to state-of-the-art equipment, facilities, and infrastructure
  • Research exchange to collaborating institution, depending on the interest of the postdoctoral candidate
  • Mentoring and career development
  • Opportunity to interact with an extensive network of national and international collaborators
  • A competitive salary and social benefits (e.g. health coverage, parental leave, social security etc.)
  • Dedicated assistance and support with various practical, social, and legal aspects (housing, visa, administration, tax etc.), especially for international candidates through our international staff office (ISO) and department.

For further information please contact Junior Group Leader Anne Loft, [email protected].

The evaluation committee will be led by ATLAS Center Director, Professor Susanne Mandrup.

Application, salary etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publications on which the applicant wishes to rely.

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online". Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. We strongly recommend that you read How to apply before you apply.
