The Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Pharmacy at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Denmark, welcomes applications for a three-year PhD position in Bacterial Coating and Catalysis, under the guidance of Dr. Changzhu Wu. This position is a part of a Carlsberg Foundation-funded project within the Semper Ardens - Accelerate framework. The project will focus on the development of supramolecular polymer coatings for bacteria, safeguarding them under harsh conditions while facilitating innovative catalysis approaches.

Working within the dynamic and international Wu group, you will be at the forefront of enzyme catalysis and protein chemistry research. By leveraging interdisciplinary expertise spanning chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering, and microbiology, the group aims to enhance the efficacy of enzymes and proteins for industrial applications in both white and red biotechnology.

We are eager to seek a motivated, ambitious, and independent individual with a background aligning with this project's focus areas. The ideal candidate should possess:
• A master’s degree in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, or a related field, with a solid background in organic and supramolecular synthesis.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English, fostering effective multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Preferred experience in areas such as supramolecular, organocatalytic, or polymeric catalysis, as well as cell coating or cell surface engineering.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU and is located in Odense. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is a department focused on basic research. We are happy to move beyond traditional disciplines and work to develop new technologies and sciences across physics, chemistry, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science and biology. The department’s research thus contributes to new knowledge and solutions with applications in the areas of climate, environment, energy, and health.

Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
