The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support (IFRC PS Centre) is re-advertising for an experienced mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) advisor to join our international team in Copenhagen at the IFRC PS Centre. We are excited to offer the right candidate the opportunity to build and increase the capacity of Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies to deliver MHPSS services.

In this position you will be using your skills and experience to support the IFRC PS Centre’s response to the Ukraine crisis. You will play a leading role in the implementation of the EU funded project: ‘Provision of quality and timely psychological first aid to people affected by the Ukraine crisis’ – specifically focusing on the implementation in National Societies across the European and Central Asia region. You will have an integral role in building MHPSS capacity, facilitating trainings (incl. Training of Trainers), advising on service delivery, and mentoring and supervising implementing National Society volunteers and staff across the region.

You will become part of a lively, ambitious, and well-functioning team within the IFRC PS Centre, where we care for each other and value a good work-life balance. The position is based in Copenhagen, Denmark and it is a requirement to work out of the Copenhagen office. Travel is expected in this position (40+ work days/ year).

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Develop packages of tools, service approaches and training/ capacity-building curriculums to guide National Societies on how they can provide community-based mental health and psychosocial support services in accordance with their mandate and auxiliary role.
  • Conduct assessment/s, build capacity and advise on the establishment of mentoring/supervision structures in National Societies across the Europe and Central Asia region.
  • Develop, culturally adapt, and disseminate tools to enable National Society volunteers and staff to offer Psychological First Aid, Protecting Family Links and other psychological support to Ukrainian refugees. Adapt existing training packages to the current context and different needs.
  • Quality assures trainings and provide ongoing technical support to trainers and RCRC MHPSS focal persons throughout the project.
  • Provide guidelines, guidance, and mentoring for team leaders on caring for staff and volunteers, including monitoring and evaluation and supervision approaches.
  • Support National Societies to generally understand, promote and raise the psychosocial well-being of beneficiaries, staff and volunteers
  • Follow the implementation of community-based mental health and psychosocial services within National Societies and accompany/ mentor NS’s where applicable.
  • Support the drafting of content to communication materials, briefing papers, Social Media, podcasts and other publications
  • Support proposal writing.
  • Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Head of MHPSS Technical Unit. Ad hoc assignments are part of our daily work, and we try to cover for each other when colleagues are away on work-related travel or holiday.

Experience and skills (required)

  • Professional education in mental health, psychology or social work (Master’s degree level).
  • Minimum five years of relevant work experience in delivering MHPSS services.
  • Previous volunteering experience or work within/ for the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (a National Society, the IFRC or the ICRC).
  • Demonstrated skills in facilitating MHPSS trainings and Training of Trainers, as well as follow up implementation support and supervision.
  • Proven skills in developing and drafting written tools and materials for volunteers and various practitioners embedded within communities.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office package.
  • Aptitude for learning and using new digital tools and databases.
  • Advanced written and spoken English, and working knowledge of Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish and/or Chinese is an asset.

The IFRC Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support (IFRC PS Centre) is a lively Centre with an international atmosphere. Our working language is English. We are mandated to support the 193 National Societies of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and influence the global MHPSS agenda. The IFRC PS Centre is a delegated function of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, hosted by Danish Red Cross. It aims to improve mental health and psychosocial well-being through operational assistance, capacity development of National Societies, competence development of staff and volunteers, knowledge generation and knowledge sharing, and communication and humanitarian diplomacy.

Employment Conditions

Danish Red Cross is the legal employer, and the duty station is at Hejrevej 30 st., 2400 København NV. The assignment will commence 1 June 2023, or as soon as possible.

Salary level and benefits will be in accordance with the Danish Red Cross Staff Agreement with AC/HK. The positions are classified for salary between DKK 43.900 - 48.200 per month including pension, and according to qualifications and experience.
