Are you looking for an exciting internship opportunity with a large, global NGO - and are you interested in protection of refugees and displaced persons and their rights? Then you might be our new Intern for the Fall 2023 semester.

Who are we?

The Global Protection Unit (GPU) is situated in the Department of Programme, Policy and External Relations, which is responsible for developing policy, programmatic concepts and strategies relevant to DRC’s operations and deliver technical programme support to operations within these areas. The GPU oversees DRC’s protection work globally, amongst others through development and dissemination of policy, standards and guidance, protection programme quality assurance, technical field support and capacity building on protection policies, standards, guidance and tools, and advocacy efforts.

About the internship

The Intern will be a part of the GPU and support the Unit’s work on knowledge and information management, development, communication and dissemination of global Protection policy, standards and guidance, and the delivery of thematic events and training.

Under the guidance of GPU colleagues, the intern will support 1) Knowledge, information management and

documentation (30%); 2) Contribute to the development and rollout of policies and guidance (30%); and 3) Contribute to preparation and delivery of thematic and learning events (40%).

The tasks will include, but will not be limited to:

Information and Knowledge Management

  • Information management, including analysis and surveys targeting protection professionals
  • Maintain and support the GPU knowledge management, including repository of policies, standards, guidance, tools and reference documents and the Protection Sector’s intranet page

Development and Rollout of Protection Policies & Guidance

  • Develop and support GPU communication and rollout of protection policy & guidance efforts
  • Contribute to the development of protection policy and guidance (e.g. Protection Prevention guidance, guidance on identification of protection risks and inclusion of minority and diverse SOGIESC)
  • Contribute to the continued rollout of the revised Child Protection Policy & operational guidance

Preparation and Delivery of Thematic & Learning Events

  • Support the development of webinars, trainings and meetings on Protection components and Age, Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming (AGDM)
  • Contribute to preparation and delivery of thematic learning events, incl. the annual 4-day Global Protection Training and AGDM training of trainers
  • Coordinate and support GPU administrative tasks, including monthly Regional Protection Coordinator meetings.

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to:

  • Communicate clearly and be able to engage with colleagues from different cultures

  • Show attention to detail and commitment to delivering products of high quality
  • Be proactive, open-minded and flexible towards the different tasks assigned to you, including being willing and interested in undertaking other ad hoc tasks, as required
  • Commit to the values and Code of Behaviour of the Danish Refugee Council

All employees and interns in DRC should master DRC's core competencies: Communicating, Taking the lead, Collaborating, Striving for excellence and Demonstrating integrity. Moreover, we also expect the following:

  • Currently studying at BA or MA level
  • Interest in humanitarian work, forced displacement, human rights and protection work
  • Creative competencies and ability to think outside of the box, to identify and develop engaging and stimulating channels through which to communicate to different target groups
  • Analytical skills and ability to grasp and communicate abstract concepts.

It is a requirement that you are enrolled in a university in order to be considered for the internship.

We offer

Contract length: 4-6 months subject to study requirements and further dialogue

Workplace: DRC Headquarters located Borgergade 10, Copenhagen

Start date: Mid-August or start September. We can be flexible on the start date.

Working hours: Approximately 30 hours per week, subject to study requirements and further dialogue. We offer flexibility when you have study obligations next to the internship.

The internship is not paid but we offer:

  • 2 (unpaid) vacation days per month. The days can either be spent as you earn them or be accumulated
  • Free lunch in our canteen (subject to our canteen being open)
  • Free participation in our Summer/Winter party (subject to dates)

Please note that if you do not have the right to work in Denmark (through nationality or existing work visa), you will need to apply for it if selected for the internship. This process can take up to three months from initiating the process. You can read more here.
