Network Capacity Manager, Network Product Engineering (Maersk)

This position can be based in Maidenhead - UK, Copenhagen - Denmark or Pune/Bangalore - India.

As a Network Capacity Manager, you will lead on developing a world class data-driven approach towards addressing the capacity planning needs for our network and perimeter platforms that enable our highly distributed global business for site, fleet, asset and IoT connectivity, required to deliver against our integrator business strategy.

You will be exposed to a wide and challenging range of needs and opportunities requiring you to engage closely with stakeholders across all Maersk as you mature, evolve and operate our portfolio of networking and perimeter capabilities.

The Network Product Engineering function is pivotal to our transformation, it is a central team within Network Architecture & Engineering, responsible for the delivery of the product roadmaps, technical vision, design build quality and L2-to-resolution in-life operation of network and perimeter platforms, products and capabilities provided to Maersk.

Reporting to the Head of Network Product Engineering you will serve as an Network Capacity Manager. This role is responsible centrally and locally for the meeting our network, perimeter and underpinning technology infrastructure planning goals, including capacity planning, performance planning and network economics. Developing insights which reinforce planning decisions or support wider commercial objectives.

It has a critical role to play as we continue to develop our long-term multi-technology and multi-product network and perimeter capabilities, connecting our asset, sites and people on land and at sea. Delivering best in class global connectivity and perimeter services that not only meet the need of our business today but will be a differentiator, enabling our colleagues and partners with technology solutions that are a catalyst for productivity and innovation.

Scope

All data networks provided to Maersk across Core, Edge and Cloud locations (offices, warehouses, terminals, vessels, data centres, cloud etc), and the perimeter services that protect and enable them including but not limited to:

  • Wireless Transport: Satellite | 4G/LTE | 5G
  • IoT Networking Solutions: Industrial Wi-Fi
  • WAN: Internet | IP/MPLS | Next-Gen/SD WAN
  • LAN: DC Networking | SDN | Fixed & Wireless
  • Perimeter : Load balancers | NG Firewalls | Security Service Edge
  • Time Synchronisation: GPS | Grand Master Clocks

Specific Job Requirements -


  • The role holder provides detailed capacity data analysis of consumption across all network, perimeter and underpinning technology domains, identifying consumption trends, optimisation opportunities and detecting anomalies in usage.
  • Create custom capacity reports, dashboards, KPI creation and tracking, and ad-hoc analysis to be delivered to internal stakeholders.
  • Work with Strategy & Portfolio Operations, technology vendors and managed service partners to identify cost optimisation opportunities and inform the business and technical owners. Including but not limited to rightsizing, reservations, savings plans, wastage removal, and technology upgrades.
  • Perform daily data analysis of network, perimeter and underpinning technology consumption to ensure that infrastructure and where present managed services are able to deliver the agreed service level targets for capacity and performance.
  • Manage the repository and access of all capacity planning data. Forecast the capacity of production services, this will include initiating proactive and reactive action to ensure that the performances and capabilities of network and perimeter services meet their agreed targets.
  • Oversight and responsibility for the capacity plan covering scenarios for different predictions of business demand to deliver the agreed service target levels. Identify future business requirements that will affect capacity and availability requirements and ensure there is a match between the capacity of network, perimeter underpinning technology and the agreed business demands.
  • Track network, perimeter and underpinning technology resource usage and promptly identify capacity issues and provide capacity trending information to allow for forecasting future capacity requirements.

What I'll be doing – your accountabilities?


Network Capacity Management – Leading the network and perimeter capacity management cycle. Ensuring the right resources are deployed at the right time in the right place at the right cost to underpin all connectivity services across Core, Edge and Cloud:

  • Ownership of the capacity planning processes and oversight of the delivery of these processes. Ensuring capacity, performance, availability requirements are optimised and cost justified.
  • Build internal, external and third-party supplier relationships to ensure full visibility of network capacity.
  • Initiate and mange network and perimeter capacity changes to meet demand and or maintain SLAs.
  • Produce high quality reports, dashboards and manage associated actions; maintenance and improvement of role related management documentation
  • Support cost forecasting across the network and perimeter estate considering proposed/planned changes, new sites to be deployed in the future and cost comparison across the eco-system
  • Network modelling to inform data-driven investment decision making:
    • Describe scenarios and articulate recommendations on the implications of future architectures, technologies, and products
    • Influence the sourcing and selection of network and perimeter technology and services


The Candidate -


To be considered for this opportunity candidates will have the following capabilities.

  • A demonstrable track record operating as a Network Capacity Planner in a multi-vendor and or multi-MSP production environments, with business-critical, high-availability, high-throughput systems and networks
  • Substantial hands-on experience within a globally focused Systems Integrator, Service Provider, Network Technology Vendor or Enterprise, modelling complex composite network and perimeter services

  • A curious, data driven and analytical mindset, needs to be highly numerate, and able to realise cost synergies, with strong MS Excel data analysis skills

  • Able to provide technical solutions (tooling), processes definition and governance for capacity planning and optimisation of IP, Ethernet, Cloud based networks and underpinning IT Infrastructure
  • Proven experience in defining and understanding KPI definitions, formula and measurements of IP, Ethernet, Cloud based networks and underpinning technology Infrastructure
  • Lead Network Designer level credibility engage on network topics at all levels internally and externally
  • Expertise across Layer 1 - 4 of the OSI stack in both physical and virtual contexts
  • Requires detailed standards (ITU Y.1564 | IETF RFC 2544, 6349, 5357, 862, 7011, 3411/348, 5424) and open-source (IPERF, sFlow, JSON) passive and active network instrumentation knowledge
  • Able to analyse in depth, drive test logs, wireshark traces and protocol analysers traces for IP, Ethernet and Cloud based networks running over heterogeneous media.
  • Requires detailed understanding of linkages between microburst and bandwidth utilisation
  • Understanding of FinOps practice including key principles, domains and capabilities.
  • Some knowledge and experience with Azure and AWS technologies. (Foundation level)
  • Experience of Cloud management tools such as Azure Cost Management & Cloudability, AWS cost explorer, Cloudwatch
  • Knowledge IT Service management tools e.g. ServiceNow, Atlassian would be beneficial.
