Esbjerg

The University of Southern Denmark in Esbjerg invites applications for an a 3-year fixed-term assistant professorship position in cultural sociology at the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics). The position is from 1.8. 2022 or soon hereafter.

SEBE is part of the Faculty of Social Science and is part of Campus Esbjerg. The Department employs approx. 40 people. Research in the Department is organized in three research groups, and the announced position will be part of the Sociology Group with teaching responsibilities in Esbjerg. The research of the group mainly covers rural life conditions/rural sociology, civil society, and the impact of digitalization on culture and social relations. (See the profile of the group at https://www.sdu.dk/en/forskning/forskningsenheder/samf/soc).

Specific current topics of research include:

  • Life quality in rural areas
  • Cultural activities in rural areas
  • The digitalization of the public sector and its impact on state-citizen relations
  • Action groups and local democracy
  • Rural urban migration
  • The role of associational life and volunteering in terms of maintaining sustainable rural communities
  • Public-Private co-operation in associations that address social problems

The position:
The Department provides teaching for the degrees in Environmental and Resource Management (M.Sc.), General Business Administration and Economics (B.Sc.), Marketing and Innovation (M.Sc.), Sports and Event Management (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), Cultural Sociology (B.Sc and M.Sc.), and Diploma and MBA programs in Business Administration and Economics. The Department provides modern facilities for research and teaching.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and offer supervision on the BA program in Sociology and Cultural Analysis and on the MA program in Cultural Sociology (you can read about the programs here https://www.sdu.dk/da/uddannelse/bachelor/sociologi_kulturanalyse https://www.sdu.dk/en/uddannelse/kandidat/cultsocstp ). Over time, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree as funding conditions evolve.

Formal pedagogical training such as “adjunktpædagogikum/lecturer training program” or equivalent must have been obtained or will be expected to be completed within the first two years of employment.

Applicants are expected to have a strong command of classical and modern sociological theory and of qualitative and/or quantitative methods. The preferred applicants’ research activity is expected to complement the research profile of the Sociology group’s research profile and to be published in the most relevant high-quality international journals. The assessment committee evaluates the applications based on the scholarly qualification guidelines of the department.

Job Qualifications:
The successful applicant is expected to play an active role in the Sociology research group and to be able to work collaboratively with colleagues in this and other research groups and centers at the Department. As the research group is engaged in many externally funded projects, the successful applicant will enjoy the benefits of working in an inspiring and open research environment.

Since the position requires teaching and supervision at our BA program in Sociology Cultural Analysis the ability to teach and network in Danish language is a strong advantage. If the candidate does not speak Danish he or she will be expected to have required a command of the language after a maximum of 2 years. Language acquisition will be supported by the department and Esbjerg Kommune.

The Department provides a competitive salary, modern facilities for research and teaching, as well as resources for research assistants and for travel and conference participation. We expect applicants to be present regularly and approx. 3 days pr. week.

Appointment to the position requires a PhD or equivalent and will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

Assessment of applications will be done under existing Appointment Order for universities.
Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.

Applications that are incomplete with regard to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
