About Hitachi Zosen Inova



Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) is a global cleantech company operating in energy from waste (EfW) and renewable gas. The roots of the company are in Switzerland, where they were established in 1933 as “L. von Roll Aktiengesellschaft”, later known as Von Roll Inova. Since 2010 they have been part of the Hitachi Zosen Corporation, one of Japan’s largest industrial and engineering firms and a longstanding partner and licensee of Von Roll Inova. To this day they foster the spirit of a traditional Swiss company with headquarters in Zurich - combined with the know-how and economic strength of an international group.

HZI have been building and maintaining plants for almost 90 years having more than 800 reference projects worldwide and an organization of more than 2.000 employees. Their main focus is on converting solid and organic waste streams to valuable end commodities, incl. electricity, heat, renewable hydrogen & methane, metals, salts etc. They develop projects with their clients and then draw on their experience as a general engineering, procurement and construction contractor to deliver on their behalf complex turnkey plants and system solutions for thermal and biological EfW recovery, gas upgrading and power to gas. They also offer comprehensive, expert and reliable after-sales services for operators of existing plants.

The job



Reporting to HZI’s Director of O&M Business you will aim to ensure “best in class” performance on all HZI Build Own Operate (BOO) Renewable Gas (RG) O&M Sites, currently two in Germany and one in Switzerland. You will lead and manage the O&M BOO RG projects which are intended for unmanned operation with very little or no site organization. Furthermore, you will act as part of the JV Board if a partnership has been established in the project.

You will be appointed for new projects as early in the process as possible enabling a Life Cycle Management approach and ensuring all project agreements supporting this approach. During the project execution there will be a transition and hand-over from the Business Development team, and then you will assume the full responsibility for the project including the project P/L.

The key KPI’s for the role will be:

  • Compliance with the HZI HSE Safety Metrics
  • Plant availability
  • Fleet related KPI’s
  • OPEX optimization
  • Competence development of plant team
  • Asset owner satisfaction

As HZI’s new Portfolio Manager you will be responsible for the following working areas:

General:

  • Ensure and be responsible for all aspects of Contract Management, Stakeholder Management, Reporting & Forecasting, accounting, procurement, and invoicing.
  • In case of JV Partnership, act on behalf of HZI in the JV Board.

Business development phase:

  • Review and comment on all project documents to ensure compliance between contracts, budgets, operating model, and the business case.
  • Report and advise on all discrepancies, non-compliances etc.
  • Initial assessments of the need for LTSA’s or key subcontractor agreements.

Project execution and Pre-Mobilisation:

  • Participate in and if agreed lead all project and stakeholder meetings.
  • Monitor all EPC deliveries to ensure compliance with EPC contractual obligations.
  • Ensure claims are raised in case of EPC non-compliances.
  • Secure all LTSA’s or key subcontractor agreements necessary for operation and maintenance.

Pre-Mobilisation and Mobilisation:

  • Initiate the O&M Operational Readiness team to start mobilising any remote monitoring, data collection and analysis, PMS, CMMS, inventory, finance, and any other IT tools.
  • Advise and support the transition process from EPC project to Commercial Operations, ensuring that all relevant EPC deliverables have been received and understood enabling efficient and high performing O&M after Hand-over.

Commercial Operations:

  • Support the O&M teams with continues improvement of output and availability including all aspects of Plant Performance, Strategic Maintenance, PMS System and OPEX improvements.
  • Develop the relations to the O&M teams by means of regular visits to site, participating in relevant meetings, giving relevant feedback and advice in accordance with good industry practice and HZI standards.
  • Ensure that performance issues after Hand-over are communicated with enough level of technical insight enabling Warranty / Engineering to identify the right solution.

You can expect 40-60 days’ travel activity, mainly in Germany and Switzerland.

Your professional and personal qualifications



Your educational background is not our primary focus. It is your professional experience that counts. However, we imagine a person with a technical background such as a master’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering – possibly supplemented by a business degree. Combined with commercial and managerial experience.

The job requires that you are fluent in English and German, both verbal and written. Other languages will be an advantage. Since most operational and commercial activities in this role will take place in Germany and Switzerland it is important that you are based accordingly.

Being the ideal candidate, we presume that you possess the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 15 years of plant/project/asset management experience, preferably in an international energy/technology company
  • Strong safety mindset
  • General business and commercial understanding as well as detailed O&M business understanding (e.g. Life Cycle Management and Total Cost of Ownership)
  • High knowledge of the cleantech industry and related local legislation
  • Very strong project management skills, including prioritization and decision making
  • Strong leader with performance management skills
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization and utilize resources efficiently
  • Continuous improvement and root cause mindset
  • Good negotiation and influencing skills
  • Strong financial acumen
