The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation is seeking a Research Assistant to join our team in developing robotic 3D printing methods using novel, plant-based biopolymer materials. This work is carried out in collaboration with the Polymer Centre at the Danish Technological University, where new biopolymers have been developed within the EU-funded RAWproject.eu.

The vacant Research Assistant is affiliated within the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture (CITA) at the Institute of Architecture and Technology. Employment will happen on 1 February 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

The position

The position as Research Assistant will consist of research. Teaching and other tasks may occur to a limited extent.

Your duties will include:

  • Develop and scale robotic 3D printing methods and hardware for architectural applications.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team on sensing, data collection, and analysis, including the use of machine learning and related methods.
  • Contribute to the EU-funded RAWproject.eu.

Qualifications

You hold a master’s degree in architecture or in another field relevant to the position, e.g. MSc in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design.

We expect that you have the following qualifications:

  • Experience with hardware development and programming for fabrication systems (e.g. arduino or raspberry pi)
  • Experience in robotic tool path planning and programming
  • Skills in sensing, data collection or data analysis (e.g., machine learning)
  • Interest in sustainable materials and architectural processes.

Salary and terms of employment

The terms of pay and employment will be in accordance with the agreement in force between the Danish Ministry of Finance and a number of organisations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academic staff in public service. A qualification allowance will be negotiable, depending on your skills and experience.

The position will also be filled in accordance with the applicable job structure for artistic and Academic staff at the Royal Danish Academy og Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design, Conservation; Aarhus School of Architecture and Kolding School of Design – Ministerial Order No. 1190 of 21 August 2023.

This is a full-time position with an average of 37 working hours per week.

The position expires without further warning after 1 year, but with the possibility of extension.
