The University seeks to appoint an associate professor to the Globe Institute to commence July 15, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

The Globe Institute invites applications for an associate professorship in planetary sciences at the Centre for Star and Planet Formation starting July 15, 2024 or soon thereafter. The Centre for Star and Planet Formation is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the formation of planetary systems, including the Solar System, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines astronomy, astrophysics and cosmochemistry. Globe institute is a newly established department at the Faculty of Health and Medical

Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Globe aims for interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach and therefore has a strong focus on developing transformative science across our planet’s history.

The candidate is expected to lead original scientific research addressing a broad range of fundamental questions in planetary sciences, with a strong focus on the geological history and early habitability of Mars. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in robotics exploration of Mars and, importantly, with a track record of collaboration international space agencies, industry partners, and interdisciplinary research teams to develop mission concepts and deploy robotic systems for Mars exploration. In particular, we expect candidates to take full advantage of the broad range of expertise present at The Centre for Star and Planet Formation (StarPlan) on theoretical planet formation models and cosmochemical constraints on the formation of rocky planets in the Solar System. The candidate will be supported in actively applying to secure external funding to building and expanding the research group. Moreover, with expect the candidate to engage with the public through outreach activities, educational programs, and media appearances to promote awareness and enthusiasm for Mars exploration and space science.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

• Research, including publication/academic dissemination
• Research-based teaching, including associated examination
• Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
• Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
• Academic assessments

Required qualifications

• Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways

The associate professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2 years.

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
