Niels Bohr Institute
Faculty of SCIENCE

University of Copenhagen

The newly established Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Program (NQCP) is building a talented and diverse international team to create a cutting-edge program in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. At the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where the formulation of Quantum Mechanics was born 100 years ago, the ambition is to build a mission-driven full-stack approach which will involve exciting innovations at every level, from the quantum processor to the quantum-classical interface all the way quantum algorithms and applications. The vision of the programme is to enable the development of fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware and quantum algorithms that solve important problems in the life-sciences.

NQCP invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in simulation of quantum computing circuits and/or quantum materials

Start date is 1 May, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project

This Ph.D. project involves designing, developing, and understanding quantum components and circuits for different types of quantum computing platforms based on superconducting, spin, or photonic qubits. As an essential part of the project, you will simulate components and circuit designs of e.g. superconducting qubits, readout resonators, microwave drivelines, etc. to investigate single and multiqubit quantum processors. In collaboration with students and staff in the NQCP fabrication, characterization, and platform integrator teams, you will participate in analyzing experimental results which can be used to understand the various circuit design parameters. The initial focus is on investigating and developing a state-of-the-art architecture for a 5-qubit processor, which gives you the opportunity to have a strong impact on this design.

This Ph.D. project involves simulating quantum materials for understanding growth kinetics, various types of defects as well as supporting our development of novel quantum materials/components made by advanced fabrication techniques. You will be part of establishing advanced materials simulation to understand various types of defects in e.g. dielectrics and superconducting materials to identify main contributors to decoherence. The simulation will be correlated with experimental results from several NQCP teams and characterization techniques to analyze and improve quantum processors.

Typical simulation tools to be used are Qiskit Metal, Ansys, COMSOL, Lumerical, or similar as well as analytical continuum models including input from atomistic simulations.

You will be part of a thriving quantum ecosystem at the Niels Bohr Institute interacting with students and staff involved in all aspects related to quantum computing technology. NQCP is building a simulation team with interest spanning from materials, and devices to integrated quantum circuit simulations, which you will enter. Furthermore, your simulations will contribute to identifying the most promising platform for scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing (as a part of the NQCP pathfinder phase 2025-29), setting the grounds for the scaling phase of the programme (2030-2035).

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of physics, engineering, computer science, and chemistry preferable with experience in modelling and simulating quantum devices, circuits (superconducting, spin, photonic components), quantum materials, or electromagnetic environments.

The Scientific environment

We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment hosted by the NNF Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

Principal supervisor Prof.Peter Krogstrup

The PhD programme

Qualifications needed for the programme
To be eligible for the PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. Physics. For information of eligibility of completed programmes, see General assessments for specific countries and Assessment database.

Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.

Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Appointment will be subject to receipt of a security clearance.

Responsibilities and tasks in both PhD programmes

  • Complete and pass the MSc education in accordance with the curriculum of the MSc programme

(ONLY when you are attending the integrated MSc and PhD programme)

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision

  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
  • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

We are looking for the following qualifications:

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Relevant publications
  • Relevant work experience
  • Other relevant professional activities
  • Curious mind-set with a strong interest in Physics
  • Good language skills
