Two PhD Projects in Quantum state engineering and quantum biomedical sensing

NBI
Faculty of SCIENCE
University of Copenhagen

The Niels Bohr Institute invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Quantum Optics. The project is part of the research project “Copenhagen Center for Biomedical Quantum Sensing”, which is financed by NovoNordisk Foundation

Start date is (expected to be) 1 June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The projects
The field of the projects is experimental quantum physics. Successful candidates will join a team developing spin sensors based on room temperature atomic ensembles, aiming at applications of such sensors in biomedical diagnostics. Generation of such quantum states of atomic sensors as spin squeezed and entangled states will be explored, as well as enhancement of sensitivity by squeezing quantum noise of light. Entanglement enhanced sensitivity to magnetic biomedical sugnals will be one of the aims of the projects. Methods of magnetometry and magnetic induction tomography with atomic sensors developed at our laboratory will be further advanced within those projects.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates with experience in and profound knowledge of atomic physics and quantum physics. Hands-on experience within laser physics and quantum measurements with light is a plus.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?
Research will be carried out at QUANTOP - Center for Quantum Optics at the Niels Bohr Institute (Department of Physics) at the University of Copenhagen. QUANTOP is a vibrant group of approximately 20 researchers and students working on quantum physics of atoms, light and mechanical objects with particular emphasis on interfacing disparate quantum systems with light. Generation of entangled states of light, atoms, material objects, and their use for quantum sensing, quantum communication and quantum simulations are the core activities of the Center.

The announced PhD projects will be part of the “Copenhagen Center for Biomedical Quantum Sensing” for which the QUANTOP group is one of the core participants. The projects will be carried out in close collaboration with medical researchers studying anomalies in human heart and brain which can be diagnosted by novel quantum sensors of electro-magnetic fields. The Center has extensive national and international collaborative ties.

We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories located on Blegdamsvej 17, Copenhagen ∅.

The group is a part of the Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen.

Qualifications needed for the PhD programme
To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. in physics. For information of eligibility of completed programmes, see General assessments for specific countries and Assessment database.

Terms of employment
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.

Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Responsibilities and tasks in both PhD programmes

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
  • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

We are looking for the following qualifications

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Relevant publications
  • Relevant work experience
  • Other relevant professional activities
  • Curious mind-set with a strong interest in physics and biomedical sensing
  • Good language skills
