Background
The Danish Red Cross (DRC) is part of a global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes National Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies in 192 countries, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The purpose of DRC’s international activities is to increase humanitarian impact and to inspire and act for human dignity, resilience, and social cohesion.

The DRC International Strategy 2022-2025 identifies ‘migration, displacement, and exclusion’ as one of the key humanitarian challenges that can have severe impacts on people´s lives. Our focus remains on people and communities in fragile contexts, who, for many different reasons, find themselves in situations of vulnerability or who are marginalized and excluded. While a majority of migrants manage well on their own, several situations linked to migration and displacement can affect people directly and put them in such situations of vulnerability that require outside support.

Migration and displacement is an area of strong International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement collaboration and coordination, within and across borders along migratory routes all over the world. The global presence of the RCRC Movement is, with its focus on the most vulnerable and the auxiliary role of national societies to the national public authorities, uniquely placed to prevent and alleviate suffering through humanitarian action, to help uphold the rights and dignity of all migrants, and to assist migrants in integrating into host societies.

DRC, with significant experience of providing humanitarian support in fragile and often conflict-affected settings to affected people at all stages of migration and displacement, aspires to drive and take a leading position in facilitating these systems with partners within the movement.

Guided by RCRC Movement global and regional policies and strategies and committed to the Global compacts on migration and for refugees, DRC holds experience and evidence that also enables humanitarian diplomacy with, and on behalf of, people on the move in favour of policies that support protection, social inclusion and non-discrimination.

DRC is looking for an intern to support DRC in our daily work on migration and displacement through its international cooperation.

Expected tasks and areas of work
The intern will be part of the Technical and Quality Impact Unit in the International Department of the Danish Red Cross. Within the unit, the Migration and displacement team lead will supervise the intern.

The specific areas of work and tasks will include:

1. Support the team in maintaining an overview of all DRC supported programmes and initiatives n migration and displacement

2. Support the team in migration and displacement data collection, analysis, and use of data

3. Support the teams in general development and management tasks, including support to the development of programme/funding proposals, project descriptions, assessments, and reviews

4. Support the team in preparing for the Global Refugee Forum

5. Communication tasks:

  • Interviewing HQ and field staff on project oriented- and other migration related news, and writing the monthly newsletter based on interviews.
  • Update migration-area of the DRC Intranet with field stories and migration- and displacement trends and other news (webinars, conferences, etc)

6. Work with DRC advisors on mapping current trends on migration and displacement, with a particular focus on how climate change affects mobility

7. Participate in migration team meeting and write minutes from the meetings

8. Ad hoc tasks, identified on a weekly basis

In addition, the intern will perform other ad hoc tasks depending on interest and qualification and as assigned by the supervisors.

Duration: Intern position, 3-6 months. Flexible start, preferably between the 1st of September until the 31th of January 2024.

Required Qualifications

  • Student in global refugee or migration studies
  • Experience from NGOs or organisations working with international development work or humanitarian settings is an advantage
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Data management knowledge
  • Proven ability to deal with multiple tasks in an efficient manner
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal. Other language skills (Danish, French or Arabic will be an advantage)

Conditions
The intern will be based in DRC’s flexible office space in Copenhagen without a fixed desk/office. Starting date of the internship is the 1st of September 2023. The internship duration will be between 3-6 months and may involve travel. The job description is indicative, and further tasks and responsibilities not mentioned in the job description may occur.

The internship is unpaid, but DRC will provide a workplace and lunch and cover all costs related to participation in meetings or travels outside Copenhagen if required.

The Intern will be a part of the International Department of DRC and will report directly to the Head of the Technical Quality & Impact Unit on general HR issues and will have a technical reference line to the Migration and displacement team lead
