Sønderborg

SDU Mechatronics and the Centre of Industrial Mechanics, part of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg, invites applications a position as 4+4 PhD student in mechanical engineering. Starting date is September 1st, 2023.

Unique opportunity

The Centre for Industrial Mechanics is a newly established centre focusing on mechanics in combination with mechatronics. You have the unique opportunity to be a part of the new centre and influence the development of the centre. We are in the process of building up a mechanical engineering degree and labs to support the educational activities and the research.

Workplace description

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical engineering covers research and education spanning from fundamentals to applications of engineering science. All our courses are taught in English reflecting the fact that more than half our students and staff are internationals. The Centre for Industrial Mechanics is located at SDU's beautiful campus in Sønderborg, in the inspiring building of Alsion, which is a centre for science, culture and learning in the heart of Sønderborg and perched on the strait of water separating the island of Als from the mainland. The university has very close relations to the industry in Sønderborg, Southern Denmark and Northern Germany. A significant fraction of the projects in the centre are conducted in close cooperation with the industry, which count world leading companies in growing fields such as e-mobility, automation, climate solutions and energy efficiency.

At the Centre for Industrial Mechanics, research, education and innovation are performed in teams of scientists and support staff with competences spanning a wide range of fields including applied cyber-physical systems, mechanical structure integrity and life assessment, heating and cooling, AI, modelling and mechatronic prototyping.

The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate his/her ambition to conduct high-quality research, present the results at international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We expect the candidate to take part in select teaching activities.

Project description

As an alternative to conventional Luenberger observers, which exhibit exponential convergence, the modulating function method is a state and parameter estimation technique allowing to provide an estimate in finite-time. Over the past few years, this technique has been applied on different systems described by ODEs, fractional-order systems, as well as Partial Differential Equations, with interesting results and a good application potential. However, not many studies consider real applications.

The goal of the proposed project is to examine the applicability of the modulating function method, as well as its extend, including by considering several relevant and concrete applications, all within the mechatronics area.

Duties of the position

  • Assessment and benchmarking of different modulating function algorithms in simulation
  • Real-time implementation of modulating function algorithms on real applications
  • Development of theoretical limits for the applicability of the modulating function method

The candidate should have two or more of the following capabilities:

  • knowledge about observers for linear and nonlinear systems.
  • Fractional-order differential equations.
  • The modulating function method.
  • Extensive experience with Matlab/Simulink programming.

Important information before applying
To be considered for the position it is required that the applicant is enrolled in a Master's programme at the Faculty of Engineering, SDU, and has completed the first year at the time of enrollment.

The 4+4 PhD fellowship programme is divided into a 22 months grant period followed by an employment period. When the master's degree is achieved and you have attained a grade of at least 10 (Danish scale), you will be employed at the same terms as a 3-year PhD fellowship. Read about Work and salary conditions.

The enrollment and employment will cease without further notice at the end of the 4-year period. A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order), read more here.
