Opportunity
Shipping has commenced a rapid energy transition towards carbon neutral solutions in parallel with an even larger focus on energy efficiency. The magnitude and the speed of change is larger than any other historical changes of the industry. The design of all machinery systems on all new vessels and on many vessels currently in operation will be impacted.
Maersk is at the forefront of the change wave and we are looking for a senior leader with an urgent desire to be part of orchestrating this change.
Climate action is a strategic imperative for Maersk and we are stepping up our efforts to reduce the climate impact of our operations. Early in 2022, we announced our company target to be net zero across all emission scopes in 2040. We know this is challenging, but we trust we can do it!
93% of our scope 1 emissions originates from operation of our fleet of container vessels, thus a mammoth challenge is ahead of us, and we have kick started the transition by ordering 19 container vessels capable of burning carbon neutral methanol.
You have now the opportunity to join us and have a significant impact on how we fulfil our industry leading ambitions. We are looking for an experienced and senior leader to head our Machinery team and be part of the Fleet Technology leadership team reporting to our VP and Head of Fleet Technology. You will be responsible for the design of the machinery systems onboard our 300+ owned container fleet.
Working in the Maersk Fleet Technology team means you are working on something pretty exciting: shaping Maersk’s journey to reduce climate impact of our container vessel fleet, continuously improve the safety for our crew, cargo and vessels while optimizing cost.
We are constantly pushing the boundaries by engaging with exciting innovations and cocreating solutions with functions across Maersk and with external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
You will be heading a function consisting of approx. 35 very competent, experienced, innovative and engaged employees working in different teams, based in Copenhagen and Mumbai. The Machinery function is an integral part of the global Fleet Technology team, responsible for the current container vessel designs and the future innovative designs.
Your team is crucial to our success and is key for identifying and enabling innovative solutions within energy conversion, energy optimization, automation, and digitalization to ensure we are harvesting the benefits of emerging technologies when creating solutions for our future vessel designs while optimizing the current fleet.
Your teams are also gaining strong insights by supporting our vessels operations teams with trouble shooting, root cause analysis and optimizing maintenance of the current fleet.

What are we looking for

- Solid and broad understanding of mechanical engineering and the underlying physics.
- Strong in-side the box and outside the box innovator.
- Enjoy challenging status quo while optimizing our processes and driving process adherence in your team.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and balanced risk taking.
The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a relevant technical education within the field of mechanical Engineering and ideally you have experience as a maritime leader.
