About the PhD program Novo Nordisk and Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have initiated a new strategic partnership and created a joint PhD program with the aim to develop new technologies for Novo Nordisk. The goal is to achieve a more robust drug product design and automated product and process control for pharmaceutical products.
This collaboration program aims to build on mutual synergies between DTU and Novo Nordisk to develop future life science talents, by having PhD students developing cutting edge multidisciplinary research for Novo Nordisk pharmaceutical. Scientific insights from various disciplines like chemistry, physics, mechanics, automation, data analytics and life sciences will be key for success.
The program includes six departments from DTU (Construct, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Compute, Electro, Health Technology), and as such, the PhD programs will be anchored with supervisors from these departments.
You will be placed at the heart of a vibrant research environment, consisting of fellow PhDs, master students and industry experts serving as a node in the collaboration and expected to be participating in activities like conferences, symposiums etc. together with the other PhDs to be a central part of the studies.
About this PhD position We are looking for a strong PhD candidate for developing and sustainably deploying digital twin models of the pharmaceutical production processes from the intralogistics perspective. The objective of the PhD project is to develop models and methodologies on building and deploying digital twin models for effective organization of data, information and material flow within production processes, warehouses and connected supply chains. Our mission is to develop a DT model for intralogistics as a decision-making tool when any changes/optimization needed to be done either in the design or operational phase. Responsibilities and qualifications
You will become part of a research team working intensively in developing and use of DTs models for intralogistics. Your key responsibilities will be: Perform the gap analysis for necessary data and data quality, IT/OT infrastructure and representative digital models and simulations.
Contribute on understanding the data related requirements for the development of DTs and establish a framework for assessing the data structure and availability
Understand and effectively use of SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) to connect the data from the physical assets from shop floor to the DT model through IT system and SAP EWM
Through simulation experiments, assess the sensitivity and performance of the DT model
Develop a demonstration case to showcase the effectiveness of the DT model in mimicking the real process and also controlling the physical assets remotely (closed loop DT) first in a brown field project (expanding an existing process) with the aim of generalizing the DT methodology to green field (a brand-new process)
Business impact Provide a holistic view of the system complexity and helping decision makers to prioritize improvement and focus area
Reducing bottlenecks and downtime in intralogistics and consequently mitigating risks
Minimizing operational ad capital expenditure
Supporting design and implementation of optimized and effective fully/semi-automated process
Shortening commissioning time and decreasing deviations
Qualifications Our ideal candidate has: A Master’s degree in engineering science or natural science or equivalent academic qualifications .
A strong background in data analysis, mathematical modelling, simulation models and computing.
Preferably practical experience with simulation models and digital twins.
An analytics background in experimental studies using simulation models is also greatly appreciated.
Fluency in English, both speaking and writing with great communication and presentation skills.
A good understanding about how to translate the business needs from line of business to functional requirements and capabilities of developed solutions

The recruitment process will be conducted by the supervisor(s) from Novo Nordisk in collaboration with the DTU supervisor(s). The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
