The position The Formulation Scientist position is anchored in the Stem Cell Analytics and Formulation Department and is laboratory driven and includes experiments to investigate material properties and cellular analysis as well as data handling, presentations, and project planning together with other scientists and laboratory technicians. Your main tasks will include: Cell compatible biomaterial formulations and investigating the properties of the formulation candidates for our Cell Therapy Drug Products.
Independently planning and executing experiments in the laboratory to evaluate the cell support and flow properties of different liquid formulations.
Running functional characterisation studies using different analytical techniques for screening and optimization of different biomaterials and perform data collection, analysis and interpretation.
The activities will require tight collaboration with analytical scientists and other departments within Stem Cell R&D such as Drug Delivery, Process Development and Devices.
Qualifications You hold a master’s or PhD degree in biotechnology, polymer chemistry, biomedical engineering, stem cell biology, process engineering or any other related area. Applicants with a master’s degree need to have 3 to 5 years of experience with stem cells and dopaminergic nerve cells. To be considered for this role you will have: In-depth knowledge about cell biology and culture, cell interactions with formulations (media) and medical devices (materials, surface finished, physical environment) and stem cell.
Preparation of clinical formulations, cryopreservation of cells, thawing of frozen cells, aseptic handling of cells.
Ideally you also have experience in developing and working with a wide range of analytical methods for characterization of polymer formulations. Experience with DoEs would be an advantage.
Solid understanding and experience using chemical and physical characterization equipment and test systems, i.e. rheometry, osmolality, molarity, pH, spent media analysis, etc.).
Experience in stem cell biology, cell differentiation, cell volume regulation, and nerve cell function, basement membrane and action potential measurements, confocal microscopy, fluorescence imaging, measuring mitochondrial energy states and internal pH measurements and rheology of low to medium viscosity liquids as well as cell-biomaterial interactions would be an advantage.

About the department The department Cell Therapy Analytics and Formulation is a part of Novo Nordisk’s Cell Therapy R&D unit, where we develop novel cell replacement therapies for the treatment of serious chronic diseases. Diabetes mellitus type 1, Parkinson’s disease and chronic heart failure are only some of the indications currently in the pipeline. You will join an international and dedicated Cell Therapy CMC division of ~75 employees, including scientists, project leaders, laboratory technicians and student workers.
