If you are looking for a research opportunity and a PhD position, here is a possibility at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. The PhD project involves advanced multiscale numerical modeling of surface deformation and roughening during metal forming. The developments will lead to better prediction of tribological conditions during forming and of product properties after production. Academic, international partners will be involved, and Danish industry will be following the developments to ensure applicability for industry. The position is to be filled January 1 2024 or soon after that.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project will focus on simulation of surface deformation and roughening during metal forming. This requires multiscale modeling involving continuum simulation at process level and crystal plasticity at microscale to account for roughening due to the grain structure. Corresponding experiments will be conducted to validate the simulations and provide further understanding of the physical phenomena.

Your primary tasks in the PhD project will be to:

  • Develop a numerical framework for multiscale simulation in metal forming.
  • Characterize and simulate process conditions at continuum scale by FEM.
  • Characterize materials and establish representative volume elements (RVEs) based on crystal plasticity.
  • Establish the communication between the two scales.
  • Predict real contact area and roughness parameters in, and resulting from, tool contact.
  • Demonstrate improved process simulation and prediction of workpiece surface topographies.

Furthermore your tasks as academic employee will include:

  • Assistance in teaching.
  • Supervision of BSc and MSc student projects.
  • Dissemination of research results in scientific journals and conferences.

You will work in a research team combining manufacturing engineering, materials science and computational engineering. A longer period at a university outside Denmark is needed, and visits and presentations to Danish industry are also expected.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with numerical simulations, e.g. FEM.
  • Good understanding of metal forming processes and/or materials science.
  • Experience with experimental work is an advantage.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Chris Valentin Nielsen and Professor Grethe Winther.
