Århus C

Aarhus School of Architecture advertises a full-time associate professor position in the subject area of urban design: the study of the development and design of urban spaces and buildings. The associate professorship should contribute to developing further the architectural education we offer and ensure the conceptual, methodological and practical skills necessary for the school to continue to train skilled architects with a holistic and site-specific approach to urban development. The associate professorship should also contribute to Aarhus School of Architecture's research and artistic development within the subject area of urban design.

Based on a solid understanding of the current challenges in urban and landscape development, we emphasise that the position should strengthen teaching in the subject area of urban design. Applicants for the associate professorship should be able to continue and strengthen the work of developing specific models for building sustainable and attractive towns. The associate professorship is advertised with the aim of finding a colleague with professional drive who can help strengthen our overall competencies in the subject area of urban design.

The urban space is an important focus area in our work; this is based on ideas about the town and urban space as being crucial for human development and socialisation. We work with dense towns, towns that create spaces, and vibrant towns. We have a design-oriented approach to both research and teaching. We do not work with sharp boundaries between different architectural disciplines, such as urban design, landscape architecture, urban planning, cultural heritage perspectives and the art of building. We see these issues as intertwined.

We are looking for a colleague who can contribute to research and to teaching architects both in relation to project development, design, architectural methods, and tools related to urban design.

We want the position filled from 1 August 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the position

An associate professorship is an open-ended position with research and/or artistic research as principal responsibilities. Publication, scientific dissemination and teaching are requirements. The position may also, by agreement, involve project management, strategic work, and administrative work.

In general, the research to teaching ratio is 40/60. The distribution between different tasks may vary, and you may be asked to perform other tasks on behalf of Aarhus School of Architecture.

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic professional integrity, who can help set the agenda for the architectural design of our society.

We emphasise that the applicant should have significant professional knowledge about urban design and is also able to communicate this knowledge to students, the adjacent academic environment, and to society. Specific knowledge about Danish practice in the subject area would be an advantage.

The associate professor will be part of a dynamic research and teaching environment, ranging from practice in our production labs, to desk crits and research and dissemination. We place a particular emphasis on the applicant's desire and ability to contribute to teamwork involving cross-disciplinary collaboration with colleagues and external parties. Relevant international contacts and networks would also be rated highly.

Your tasks would include the following:

  • Developing and managing educational components at BA, MA and postgraduate level.
  • Teaching at BA, MA and postgraduate level.
  • Developing further research in the area of urban design.
  • Drawing up applications for external research funding.
  • Supervising students and PhD students.
  • Tasks as external examiner and examination.
  • Participation in relevant councils and committees at the school.
  • Developing and maintaining external networks.

We expect you to have:

  • An educational background as an architect or similar.
  • Research production at an international level, artistic research at the highest international level or a career background in architectural practice – or a similar field – at international level.
  • Relevant teaching experience, good skills in collaboration and pedagogy, a strong professional network and extensive experience from the urban design field.

Personal qualifications

The following statements should reflect your personality:

  • You are visionary and passionate in your work and capable of translating your visions into specific results.
  • You are outgoing, you focus on collaboration, and you see the sharing of research as the foundation for a good research environment.

The affiliation of the associate professorship

The associate professorship will be affiliated with Research Laboratory 1, Transformation. Here the research is structured as overlapping subject areas and research groups. The associate professorship will contribute to developing further the laboratory's research, and preferably contribute new perspectives to existing focus areas.

The vision of the research lab is to develop and inform current transformation processes within architecture and across scales. The research deals with value-based discussions about aesthetics, urban and landscape development, sustainability, restoration, listing, etc.

The teaching associated with the position will, based on the subject area of urban design, be unfolded at Bachelor and Master level and in continuing and further education.

What we offer

Aarhus School of Architecture can offer you a creative and innovative research and teaching environment. You will have a share in the responsibility for developing further the school's research and teaching within the subject area of urban design.

We have recently moved into Denmark's first new built school of architecture, located in the heart of Aarhus, with greatly expanded workshop facilities and with an open structure that appeals to collaboration across the school's many academic environments. See the new facilities

The new building has made the school a more integrated part of the city and the surrounding area; an area that is now an environment for creativity and social commitment. An environment where tomorrow's architecture is created in collaboration with architecture firms and other stakeholders of the building industry, entrepreneurs, the municipality, the citizens of Aarhus, and partners from all over the world. As a Scandinavian institution, we have a long-standing tradition of cultivating a local approach to architecture, which is also our starting point for a strong international focus.

Employees of Aarhus School of Architecture are given opportunities to work with people of different age groups and from many different cultures. We work together across the institution, and we all play an important role. For which reason, our voice is heard regardless of the position we are employed in. We believe that through mutual recognition and by focusing on cooperation we create the best framework for an attractive and vibrant workplace.

How to apply

Please send us your application, including a description of your visions for research and teaching and for developing the subject area of the position, along with your thoughts on collaboration with external knowledge environments and stakeholders.

The application must not exceed six pages (A4) in total and may be written in Danish or English.

You also need to upload the following documents (as PFD files):

  • Diplomas at Master and PhD level
  • An updated CV
  • A portfolio containing selected examples of your professional, academic and/or teaching-related practice (no more than 20 MB)
  • A list of publications

Aarhus School of Architecture is a versatile workplace with room for diversity. And we encourage all interested applicants who have the relevant qualifications to apply for the position.

Please note that the position will be advertised and filled in accordance with the Ministry of Higher Education and Science's Order of 12 April 2019 on the employment of artistic and scientific staff at higher artistic educational institutions in the area governed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Shortlisting

Aarhus School of Architecture shortlists applicants. Shortlisting means that only those applicants who, based on an overall assessment, best match the needs of the school are selected for academic assessment. This selection is based on the formal and academic requirements for applicants stated in the job advertisement. All applicants will be informed whether their application has been shortlisted for assessment.

Following this, an appointment committee assesses the selected applicants in relation to the specific position.

Salary and conditions of employment

The salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) with an opportunity of negotiating a supplement for qualifications depending on experience and qualifications.

Concurrent employment will be accepted to a limited extent if this employment is compatible with performing the work of an associate professor.

Non-Danish speaking applicants are expected to acquire Danish language skills at user level within a three-year horizon.

Our Vision

At Aarhus School of Architecture we believe that architecture should influence the world and create sustainable frameworks for the people who inhabit it. This is the reason we train architects who are able to create value for the community in a changing world through new ideas and relevant solutions. A world that increasingly challenges us to think creatively in order to exist, live and thrive.

We do this by working closely together with other professional groups, by embracing new technologies, by daring to experiment and by constantly acquiring new skills.

We use our artistic approach to find new ways. We come up with new answers through scientific studies. And through practical applications, our theoretical knowledge is transformed into professional abilities.

Our ambition is to be a Scandinavian elite institution for the development of architecture. We want to train the best architects by admitting the most suited, the most talented, and the most motivated students.

We take responsibility for and engage in the community of which we are a part.
