Frederiksberg

A three-year PhD position is open at the Center for Clinical Research and Prevention (CCRP), Section of Epidemiology, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital, The Capital Region.

About the project

The Danish researcher Henrik Dam was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of vitamin K as an essential vitamin for the activation of blood clotting factors. Beyond this, there is growing evidence that vitamin K is important for activation of other proteins important to human physiology and the prevention of age-related diseases. The overall objective of the project is to investigate health effects of vitamin K beyond coagulation. The project is based on the 20-year follow-up of the Inter99 study including a comprehensive health examination and cardiometabolic profiling (clinicaltrial.gov identifier: NCT05166447). Eligible participants will be invited to participate in the InterVitaminK trial (clinical trials.gov identifier: NCT05259046).

The InterVitaminK trial investigates the effect of daily vitamin K supplementation on cardio-metabolic and bone health in a randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled intervention trial. The aim is to provide proof-of-concept evidence that vitamin K has a potential for prevention of age-related diseases. 450 men and women will be randomized to receive one daily tablet of vitamin K or placebo for 3 years. Health examinations are scheduled at baseline, and after 1-, 2- and 3 years of intervention. The primary outcome is progression of coronary artery calcification assessed by cardiac computed tomography (CT)-scan. Secondary outcomes include arterial stiffness, blood pressure, bone mineral density, lung function, lung tissue density, and various biomarkers e.g., of glucose and bone metabolism.

About the position

The three-year PhD position is fully funded by a research grant from The Independent Research Fund Denmark. The PhD student will receive training in epidemiological and clinical research methods and radiology imaging techniques.

The PhD fellow will be part of an interdisciplinary and ambitious project team with expertise within medical imaging techniques, cardiology, epidemiology, nutrition, and clinical research. The team has a special interest in effects of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals on various chronic diseases, e.g., cardiovascular, endocrinological, and respiratory diseases. The candidate will be enrolled as PhD-student at the University of Copenhagen. The PhD-supervisor team consists of Klaus Fuglsang Kofoed, Freja Bach Kampmann, Line Lund Kårhus, and Allan Linneberg (Faculty supervisor). The project is a collaboration between several institutions, primarily CCRP, Rigshospitalet, and Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen. The candidate must expect 2–3 working days/week at CCRP and 2–3 working days/week at Dept. of Cardiology, Rigshospitalet, where the cardiac CT-scans will be performed and interpretated supervised by experienced members of the team. Health examinations in the Inter99 study and the InterVitaminK trial take place at Glostrup Hospital.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Carry out scientific tasks related to the project, including statistical and epidemiological analyses, writing of scientific articles and other communication of results, in collaboration with the supervisors and other members of the project team
  • Responsible for coordinating CT-scans including annotation and interpretation of CT-scan data.
