Professor of Science Identities
Department of Science Education
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

Danish science education needs a preeminent scholar who can strengthen our efforts to understand the formation of students’ science identities in relation to their possibilities for engaging with science education and the development of long-term interest in science, as well as how this formation unfolds in the meeting between the students’ background (e.g., gender or socio-economic background) and the cultures and practices in the disciplines they meet. Therefore, the Department of Science Education seeks a professor in science education research with a specific focus on science identities. The position is open from 1 May 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the Department

The department consists of approx. 80 persons and has since 2007 developed into one of the largest European research units in science education. We collaborate well with other Danish key stakeholders and organisations to develop Danish science education, including the 11 other departments at the Faculty of Science – Denmark's largest science research and education institution. Our researchers have wide international networks and partner in international collaborative research. It is a hallmark of our research to unite strong fundamental and applied research with high impact in society. We offer a vibrant, international, and interdisciplinary research environment and an attractive and friendly work environment. Denmark’s prestigious public foundations and large (by world standards) private foundations offer an exceptional funding landscape for science education research.

Further information on the Department is linked at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Inquiries about the position can be made to Head of Department Jan Alexis Nielsen at [email protected] and +45 35 32 03 61.

Expectations to the candidate

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field and must be able to document an excellent track record of research publications, research funding, and impact within research related to science identity formation, equity and inclusion in science education, and/or science students’ perspectives on transitions between educational levels or into vocation. Applicants must have a strong record of international research collaboration.

We prefer applicants who have

  • a research record spanning multiple educational levels (i.e., K-12 and tertiary education) and involving more than a single science discipline,
  • strong expertise in qualitative research methodology,
  • a strong record of research management,
  • experience with teaching and supervision of university science teachers.

Applicants are required to have extensive teaching experience at a research-intensive university, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon their own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen’s teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Conduct research, develop the field, perform assessment tasks, write grant applications, and undertake research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff.
  • Teach courses within the department – including teaching and supervision of teaching faculty at the Faculty of Science, student supervision, coordination and teaching of courses for students, and preparing and conducting exams.
  • Undertake tasks requested by the Department – including engaging with and participating in Department and Faculty governance structures as well as management and leadership tasks at the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented competences in relation to the six overall criteria that apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding, and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in this job advertisement provided above.
