Odense M

A small amount of organic carbon produced by photosynthesis becomes permanently buried into marine sediments. This carbon represents a net source of oxygen to the atmosphere. Oxygen is consumed again as this organic matter, known as petrographic carbon, becomes exposed on the continents in sedimentary rocks and oxidized. However, there is great uncertainty as to what controls the efficiency of this oxidation process, and thus great uncertainty in the dynamics of modern carbon cycle.

We are seeking a PhD student to use RAMAN spectroscopy to study the oxidation and recycling efficiency of petrographic carbon in the modern carbon cycle. Work will involve exploring for petrographic carbon in modern river and marine sediments and in unravelling the processes that contribute to petrographic carbon oxidation and recycling. This work will be fundamental in understanding the controls of carbon cycling on the modern Earth and also in the geologic past.

The PhD student will be part of the Villum Foundation-funded centre for Environmental and Biological Evolution (EnBiE), housed within the Nordcee group in the Department of Biology, SDU. We are looking for a strongly motivated student with a background in either the geosciences or environmental chemistry. Interested students may contact Don Canfield ([email protected]) or Sami Nabhan ([email protected]) for further information.
