At the Department of Biology, SDU our commitment to advancing the scientific understanding of aquatic ecosystems is unwavering. As an internationally recognized institution in this field, we are eager to expand our horizons and explore the critical intersection of ecosystem services and climate change adaptation. That is why we are actively seeking a dedicated postdoctoral researcher to join our dynamic team.

Project Engagement: The appointed researcher will be deeply involved in two primary research projects:

  1. INTERREG6a Algaefood: An analytical deep-dive into the ecosystem services provided by macroalgae, unravelling the intricate web of ecosystem services they provide and their intrinsic ecological roles.
  2. EMFA BlueTechpreneur: A strategic initiative aiming to bolster the skill set of professionals and fellow researchers within the expanding domain of Bluebioeconomy.

Both projects will be centred around the stunning Kerteminde Fjord, a marine ecosystem of unparalleled importance, serving as a crucial observation point for marine adaptation strategies in the face of a changing climate.

Key Responsibilities: Your role will be instrumental in conducting comprehensive measurements and assessments of the Kerteminde Fjord's ecosystem services and functions. Your key responsibilities include:

  1. Ecosystem Service Assessment: Conduct a quantitative analysis of carbon and nitrogen fluxes within the fjord to understand their ecological consequences.
  2. Eelgrass Meadow Assessment: Systematically evaluate the health and biodiversity of the eelgrass meadow, identifying critical factors.
  3. Biodiversity Measurement: Perform in-depth biodiversity assessments, detecting temporal changes and trends.
  4. Fisheries and Aquaculture Analysis: Investigate the current status and complex interactions of fisheries and aquaculture, all within the evolving ecosystem.
  5. Jellyfish Blooms: Study the intricate patterns of jellyfish blooms, with a focus on their ecological interactions with the eelgrass systems.
  6. Stakeholder Interaction: Foster and maintain constructive communication with relevant stakeholders, ensuring that research outcomes align with broader ecological, economic, and societal objectives.

Qualifications: To excel in this role, we are seeking a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Environmental Science, Ecology, Marine Biology).
  • A strong background in ecosystem services assessment and climate change adaptation.
  • Proven ability to conduct interdisciplinary research.
  • Exceptional analytical and data interpretation skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Previous experience in the field of marine and coastal ecosystems is preferred.

What We Offer: In return for your expertise and dedication, we provide:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • The opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research within a stimulating and collaborative environment. You will have the unique chance to co-design research with the Climate Cluster (SCC) and its elite centre of the Aquatic Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).
  • A three-year commitment with the potential for extension.
  • Supportive team members and access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

Location: Ecology Group, Kerteminde Marine Research Station (MRC)
