The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a 3-year position as a Ph.D. in the area of semiconductor components and their applications. The position is located in the section of Electrical Engineering in Sønderborg within the Centre for Industrial Electronics (CIE). CIE is embedded in a powerhouse in electronics, which includes researchers and developers at universities and industries on both sides of the Danish-German border. The starting date for the position is the 1st of March 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter, and will be agreed upon with the successful candidate.

CIE Research focuses on advanced active and passive power semiconductor components in competing cut-in-edge technologies. CIE semiconductor business focuses on novel WBG semiconductor devices (including GaN, and SiC) based on a judicious component design to exploit their unique properties to achieve more efficient devices that outperform the state-of-the-art. The final product will address the semiconductors industry challenge.

We are looking for a motivated candidate for a Ph.D. in “New Generation of Vertical Power GaN Devices to address current challenges”. This project is a research-industrial project which in the candidate will pursue vertical device technologies to tackle challenges for power electronic applications (Renewable energies, electric vehicles, and industrial). For designing this vertical GaN transistor, industry requirements and goals should be the priority. The position aims to design, develop, and characterize vertical GaN devices for our industry partnership.

The candidate will have the opportunity to work on several aspects involved in demonstrating high-performance devices: Numerical simulations, device fabrication in the cleanroom (relying on international partners), and device characterization (relying on the facilities in the CIE lab, for static and dynamic measurements and reliability measurements).

Job description

All the duties are based on our Industry partnerships need.

  • Design of a vertical GaN device to address current challenges based on industry needs.
  • Simulation of device by Silvaco (Fabrication process, Device, and Circuit level).
  • Involving with device development (Experimental part).
  • Measuring static and dynamic characteristics.
  • Reliability test on the developed device.
  • Involving in international projects and active on research publications.

Profile:

  • The candidate is expected to have electronic and semiconductor physics background.
  • Have an aptitude for Device Simulation (Familiar with semiconductors software).
  • Experience with GaN device technologies, device fabrication is welcome, but not a requirement.
  • Proficient in English both orally and in writing.
  • Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, how your experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
