The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI) at the Faculty of Engineering invites applications to a 3-year position as a PhD student in automation and digitalized Production working on Factory of the Future with focus at simulation and data analytics. The position is located within the TEI Section https://www.SDU.dk/en/tei at the Faculty of Engineering on the international campus Sønderborg.

The position is available from 15 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

SDU-ITI Technology Entrepreneurship and InnovationThe SDU section TEI - Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation unites international researchers from a variety of research areas and students with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

The research foster ideation, product and process development, and the commercialization of potential technical inventions.

The PhD PositionThe research for this PhD will be in close collaboration with leading Danish universities and international industrial companies. The project will focus on the digitalized factory of the future with reconfigurable and changeable systems (e.g. Matrix and Swarm production) that can adjust to changing demands. Collaborative robots are an important element of future production systems, where humans and robots can plan and setup new types for collaborations in changing configurations. The project will use advanced simulation tools for building and testing innovative new solutions.

The simulation will be coupled with game engines, virtual reality, data analytics, machine learning etc. for planning the dynamic changeability.

The goal is to develop digital twin test facilities in an innovative laboratory environment that can inspire industry and researchers to design, develop and communicate the factory of the future. The factories can be experienced by simulation, virtual reality, gaming etc. Data analytics, data science and machine learning are important to develop and configure the optimal solutions.

The candidate is expected to spend significant time in Smart Factory laboratories and by leading industrial companies. Visits to research environment in the US are expected.

RequirementsIn order to apply for this PhD program, the candidate must fulfill the following requirements:

  • A degree as Master of Science in Engineering (manufacturing, industrial, operations management or similar).
  • A grade of at least 10 on the Danish 7-point grading scale in the master thesis; The overall average grade of the master’s degree must be 8.5 or higher on the Danish 7-point grading scale. If average grade slightly lower than 8.5 a successful publication record may compensate.
  • Knowledge and practical experience within:

  • Design and operation of Manufacturing Systems
  • PLM software tools CAD, CAE, CAM, PDM
  • Automation solutions combining technology and humans e.g. Collaborative Robotics
  • Computer simulation, preferably within Siemens PLM with Tecnomatix Plant Simulation and Process Simulate/Robot Expert
  • Digital twins from design to operation
  • IT control architectures ERP, MES, Scada, PLC, CNC
  • Internet of Things - IOT
  • Industry 4.0 enabling technologies

  • Adequate communication skills in English speaking and writing
  • The PhD candidate is able to research complex theoretical knowledge and communicate this clearly and easy understandable at all levels in an industrial organization.
  • The candidate is open minded and able to challenge the company, facilitate work shops and couple theory with practice.

The PhD programThe successful PhD candidate will be enrolled at the University of Southern Denmark in accordance with the faculty regulations and the Danish ministerial order on the PhD program at the universities (PhD order). The PhD program is a research education which qualifies the PhD candidate on an international level for independent handling of research, developmental tasks and teaching in the private and public sector. The program equals 180 ECTS, equivalent to three years of full-time study and consists of the following elements:

  • A comprehensive research project under suitable supervision
  • A series of PhD courses, corresponding to 30 ECTS
  • Gaining teaching experience in a suitable educational program
  • Knowledge dissemination of research results in conferences, journal articles, etc.
  • Research stays in international environments
  • A comprehensive PhD dissertation with subsequent evaluation and defense

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master's degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).

Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The application must be in English and must include the following - the required forms must be found at the Faculty website:

  • Completed TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants. Find the form at the Faculty website.
  • Motivation letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. 2 pages). Upload in the field called "Project description".
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and teaching experience, computational skills and including personal contact information.
  • A research statement/The brief research plan mentioned above/A short PhD research proposal featuring: title, aim/objective, background, expected contribution, proposed methodology, work plan, bibliography (maximum five pages including references). Upload in the field called "Other relevant material".
  • Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams, both the original documents and in professional English translation.
  • Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Find the form at the Faculty website. Upload in one of the fields called "Publication".
  • An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called "Publication".
  • An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
  • List of publications and maximum 2 examples of relevant publications, in case you have any publications. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication.
  • Three names and emails of researcher, who can provide an informed reference letter at short notice/References, if any.
  • Reference letters may also be included/At least two signed reference letters. You're welcome to use the form for reference letter at the Faculty website.
