Opportunity

We are on a quest of decarbonising Maersk by 2040 – do you want to join us on this very ambitious journey and help us identify which new fuels to bet on?

Climate action is a key strategic imperative for Maersk and we are stepping up our efforts to reduce the climate impact of our operations. The goal is ambitious – to convert the entire fleet of 700+ vessels into a fully carbon neutral fleet - as fast and as smart as possible! This is not an easy task, since the new fuels need not only to be sustainable, but also scalable as well as economically and technically viable.

We are looking for a Senior Future Fuel Manager to join our Future Fuels team and help us explore, assess and mature new low carbon fuels for our fleet.

The Future Fuels team is a part of Maersk’s Decarbonisation Group, which also covers areas like regulatory issues, business development, life cycle assessments and customer engagement. Thus, you would gain insight into the broad range of challenges we face when trying to decarbonize shipping.

If you have the passion, curiosity and knowledge to join us on this journey we would love to hear from you!We offer a unique opportunity to play a significant role in decarbonising the shipping sector – and not the least transform Maersk into a fully carbon neutral end-to-end logistic provider.

You will get an opportunity for personal and professional development in a Fortune 500 company. Fast growth means a steady stream of new challenges, and a constant need for new ideas, knowledge and talent to overcome them. This makes our organisation a dynamic environment where your creativity, ambition and problem-solving skills will be put to test.

Your tasks will include:

  • Scouting for new promising advanced bio- and e-fuels for use in our container ships
  • Continuous evaluation of the state-of-the-art for advanced biofuels and e-fuels and new trends
  • Feasibility studies of selected fuels/technologies – covering economics, mass- and energy balances, technology readiness level, sustainability, scalability as well as operationability (technical viability with engines, etc.) and safety.
  • Dialogue and collaboration with various external advanced bio- and e-fuel producers and developers
  • Chemical process engineering support related to pilot production of our own lignin-alcohol fuel – incl. how to alter the process, change equipment, etc. to make the fuel a commercially viable fuel.
  • Systemic analysis – using/developing decarb risk models for maintaining a view of the expected price developments/availability of our (and competitors) prioritized carbon neutral fuels.
  • You will be seconded 50% of your time - for a limited period - to the newly established Maersk McKinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping - after which you will work full time for A.P. Moller - Maersk.
  • Help build and maintain a long-term portfolio of sustainable fuel solutions to support the APMM decarbonization roadmap.

You are a chemical engineer, energy engineer, process chemist, chemist, biochemist or similar – with at least 8-10 years of relevant professional experience. It is an advantage if you have a thorough understanding of the chemical ‘behaviour’ of various bio/e-fuels processes etc. and possess skills as described below:

  • Deep understanding of and technical expertise within the area of advanced biofuels and e-fuels
  • Experience with simulation programs such as Aspen Plus.
  • Experience with developing and commercialising biofuels/e-fuels
  • Experience in scaling up green fuel production
  • Experience within especially pyrolysis/HTL oils, as well as 2. G ethanol production
  • Deep understanding of chemistry related to synthesis gas. This could include pathways to production of green syngas from co-electrolysis, reverse water gas shift and similar processes. Experience with advanced biofuels characterization and perhaps engine testing
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoy communicating complex matters to a wider audience. Excellent English language skills, both orally and in writing
  • Thrive working in a fast-paced environment, where the ability to prioritize is key
  • As a person you are analytical, structured, comfortable working with details, meticulous and outgoing
  • You genuinely enjoy working in a team and contribute towards common goals
  • A go-do person, who is able to generate results and help us advance on our decarbonisation agenda
