Odense M

The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a position as associate professor in Aquatic Toxicology, to begin on 1 January 2023. Application deadline: 11 August 2022.

The ideal candidate’s research interests should cover nano- and microplastic (eco-)toxicity and toxicogenomics, and the position includes teaching in ecotoxicology and pharmaceutical toxicology. The position is a chance to collaborate with our Ecotoxicology group, and potentially also with the other main research groups at the Department of Biology: Earth Evolution, Ecology, Evolutionary Biodemography, Sound Communication and Behaviour.

We seek creative and ambitious applicants with excellent achievement records to join our interdisciplinary department and strengthen the research in nano- and microplastic toxicity and environmental fate. The department holds strong expertise in bioacoustics, behavioural neuroscience, biodemography, biogeochemistry, climate change research, freshwater and marine ecology, ecotoxicology and environmental and conservation biology.

The Ecotoxicology Group at the Department of Biology has its main emphasis on research on the effects of xenobiotics and nano- and microplastic on aquatic organisms. The group has more than 30 years of experience in aquatic toxicology. Endocrine disrupting chemicals, metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals in the environment are quantified by LC-MS-MS, GC-MS-MS and AAS, and their effects in fish, amphibians and invertebrates are investigated by i.e. advanced imaging, immunochemical and histological methods in our well-equipped modern laboratories.

The Group offers very good facilities for a variety of in vitro- and in vivo experiments. Currently, four researchers and three lab technicians form the core group, and a varying number of postdocs as well as PhD, master, and bachelor students supplement the group where both academic and social wellbeing is highly prioritized.

Our new colleague will be expected to run courses in basic toxicology for our pharmaceutical students and to supervise biology and pharmaceutical students in their bachelor, master and PhD projects in ecotoxicology topic areas.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Establish and lead her/his own research area in nano- and microplastic toxicology
  • Conduct externally funded research of the highest international standard
  • Publish research outcomes through international peer-reviewed publications
  • Contribute to teaching courses in Ecotoxicology and Pharmaceutical Toxicology and to the development of other courses in the department
  • Supervise bachelor, master and PhD students
  • Contribute to the development of public outreach and/or community involving programmes, and perform departmental and university service
  • Provide documentation of courses in pedagogics at university level or completion of postgraduate teacher training for associate professors at SDU within the first year of employment.

We support the successful candidate with:

  • Access to a well-developed research infrastructure
  • Laboratory space, shared equipment, and access to modern core facilities, such as imaging and computational (SDU eScience) facilities
  • A research climate of lively, open and critical academic discussion within and across different fields of research
  • Access to network activities among young scientists.

Qualifications
The following professional and personal qualifications are required of associate professors:

  • PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant field of research
  • Excellent track record in research and obtaining external funding
  • Experience in international research
  • Experience in under- and postgraduate teaching and supervision
  • Experience in research communication
  • Ability to strengthen national and international collaboration within the research area
  • Excellent pedagogical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Qualifications commensurate with the associate professor rank include an international standing and a well-documented teaching experience. Applicants are encouraged to explore and familiarize themselves with the faculty’s performance indicators for the associate professor level.

The aim of the advertised position is to consolidate and strengthen the research in nano- and microplastic toxicity and environmental fate. Applicants with experience in application of molecular biological techniques in ecotoxicology (cloning, PCR, RNAseq, bioinformatics, etc.) and advanced imaging and chemical analytical methods will be preferred.

For more information contact Associate Professor Henrik Holbech, [email protected] or Head of Department Gary Banta, [email protected].

Application, salary etc.
Appointment to the position will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
