The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) together with SDU Climate Cluster, invite applications for a 3-year position as PhD candidate in the area of sustainability assessment towards green transition. The position is located at SDU Life Cycle Engineering, a center in the Department of Green Technology. The position is also affiliated with the SDU Climate Cluster and is supported by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Center for Humans, Health and Technology (SDU Faculty of Business and Social Sciences) and IMT – Center for Innovative Medical Technology, OUH/SDU. Starting date is March 1st, 2023, in Odense.

Description
One of the goals in the Region of Southern Denmark’s climate strategy is to ensure a green and sustainable transition of the healthcare system including contributing to a reduction of the climate impact from the region’s operation of hospitals. Estimates indicate that the Danish health sector is responsible for approx. 6 percent of Denmark’s greenhouse gas emissions and the system uses many resources that contribute to both resource depletion and result in large amounts of waste that is not recycled.

The PhD project will map possible reduction paths, identify options and barriers and make recommendations for a better climate behavior at the hospitals, so that the hospitals in this and other regions are capable of reducing both their resource consumption and the climate and environmental impact effectively. The project will combine bottom-up approaches (e.g., mapping and assessment of options to circular economy practice) with top-down regional systems and scenarios assessment (e.g., by IO-LCA).
