Odense M

At the Department of Law, University of Southern Denmark, a postdoc position will be available as of 1 February 2024, or by further agreement. The place of work will be Campus Odense.

You will be a part of an interdisciplinary group of researchers all connected to the research project “SDU Maritime Research Platform (MRP)”. The project was established in 2022 and builds on a grant from the A/S Dampskibsselskabet Orient’s Fond. The platform contains diverse maritime research projects across four faculties at the University of Southern Denmark. The projects all relate to the maritime aspects of the offshore sector and have partly a shared and partly a specific focus. The themes cover a wide range of disciplines such as sustainability, safety, human factors, history, logistics, maritime engineering and architecture and maritime operations. All participants form an integral part of the platform, and it is a precondition that you are interested in – and willing to – engaging in cross-disciplinary discourse and idea development.

See further here.

You will be focusing on Work Package 5, which deals with legal and regulatory aspects including particularly aspects of how the maritime industry is active in the co-creation of rules and other legal frameworks relevant to it. The maritime sector is regulated on national, regional as well as international levels. However, the creation of this regulation is characterized by a high level of interaction between public institutions, NGOs and private entities. In other words: The maritime industry has managed to obtain a high degree of influence on the regulation under which it operates. This interaction can be both beneficial and counterproductive in respect to the goals which the maritime industry is expected to achieve, such as transition to the green agenda or good working environments.

You may also engage in research in other legal and regulatory aspects related to subjects relevant to the platform.

Job description
The responsibilities of the postdoc at the Department of Law for this call will typically include the following tasks:

  • Publish scientific results internationally, both individually and co-authored
  • Make yourself and your knowledge available to others by engaging in various knowledge exchange activities both inside and outside the university
  • Build relations to and cooperate with external stakeholders
  • Undertake administrative tasks related to your research

The postdoc position may involve limited teaching obligations – however, only after agreement with the main supervisor.

  • have a PhD degree in law or a cross-disciplinary PhD which includes law
  • have an interest in maritime law and in the interaction between law and politics
  • want to participate in cross-disciplinary research collaborations
  • be curious, inventive and in possession of good interpersonal skills
  • be able to define a relevant and ambitious research question

It will be an advantage if you have working knowledge of one of the Scandinavian languages as some of the sources you will be dealing with will be in Danish.

Records of published research prior to the application may be regarded as an advantage, and experience outside of legal research may be considered relevant for candidates’ applications. However, the combined contents of the application, enthusiasm and determination of the candidate will also be taken into consideration in order to find the best match for the position/team.
