The Software Engineering Section at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU Odense Campus) invites applications for an 18-month full time Postdoc position with the possibility of extension for the project Safe and Trustworthy Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems. The start date is as soon as possible and will be agreed upon with the successful candidate.

We seek candidates with relevant background experience who are interested in applying and scaling formal methods to AI-enabled CPS design to increase confidence in safety, security, robustness, or resilience of the CPS and to provide evidence that the systems avoid failures, are robust against attacks, and are capable of recovery.

The successful applicant will conduct R&D on advanced formal design & analysis techniques including tool-supported system verification & validation, model transformation, and automatic code generation for intelligent CPS applications (e.g., robotics, drones, autonomous, automation systems, etc.). Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to:

  • Safety guarantees for AI/ML-based systems.
  • Robustness against adversarial attacks.
  • Model-based engineering approaches and compliance verification techniques.
  • Safety and security-by-design.
  • Model checking and proofs of safety and/or security properties.

SDU Software Engineering is part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moeller Institute at the Faculty of Engineering in Odense. The Software Engineering Section aims at developing and disseminating effective and efficient methods to support high quality and rapid software development of complex and safety-critical systems.

SDU Software Engineering collaborates intensively with industry, and it is expected that a large part of the research is in collaboration with companies across various domains as well the Center of Industrial Software (CIS at SDU Sønderborg campus).

Key responsibilities of the Postdoc include:

  • Conducting scientific research and publishing results in high quality scientific conferences/journals.
  • Participating actively in research coordination meetings and dissemination activities.
  • Contributing to the project deliverables and software tool development.

Qualification and requirements:

  • PhD degree in computer science/software engineering or related areas.
  • Research expertise with background in at least one of the following areas: Applied formal methods, model-based system engineering, software verification & validation (e.g., model checking, testing, SAT, simulation), ML/AI, and willingness to enhance knowledge in several of the listed areas.
  • Proficiency in programming skills (C/C++, Python, MATLAB, Simulink) is beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills and teamwork capabilities.
  • Independence to lead an original line of research.
  • English language fluency in both speaking and writing.

Assessment process:

Applications will be assessed by an expert. Shortlisting may be used. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty. An interview may be part of the selection process.

Conditions of employment:
