Consultancy in gastrointestinal surgery combined with a clinical professorship in Surgery with special focus on Interventional Ultrasound

A clinical position as consultant of surgical ultrasound at the Department of Surgery at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Surgery with Special Focus on Interventional Ultrasound.

With this new position the Department of Surgery, Zealand University Hospital in collaboration with Copenhagen University wishes to strengthen the focus on the multidisciplinary approach for treating patients undergoing surgery for benign and malignant diseases through developing invasive diagnostics, ultrasound-based interventions and through educating the next generation of surgeons with radiological expertise.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The surgical department comprises of approximately 300 employees. The department is a part of Zealand University Hospital, the youngest university hospital in Denmark. The surgical staff comprises of 70 doctors, of these there are 38 consultants, 1 professor and 10 associate professors.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The department is divided into 6 sections; acute surgery, upper GI surgery (including bariatric surgery), colorectal surgery (including approximately 300 CRC operations pa.), advanced endoscopy, outpatient clinic including a section for advanced ultrasound diagnostics and therapies. The department performs robotic surgery, both benign and malignant. The department has a large research department with a staff of more than 50 researchers and publishing more than 50 peer reviewed papers each year.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in advanced ultrasound and ultrasound guided interventions in oncology and as a clinical professor of Surgery the Department of surgery wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research acknowledging the increasing need for minimally invasive and transcutaneous ultrasound guided therapies. In addition, the department wants to facilitate the education of the next generation of surgeons through focus on pre and especially postgraduate education and training in invasive diagnostics and therapeutics such as transcutaneous invasive techniques in metastatic cancer.

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in radiology or surgery with extensive experience in advanced ultrasound based diagnostics and invasive therapies preferable with long standing experience in this area and in postgraduate teaching

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Zealand University Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Surgery. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the department of surgery. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Surgery, Zealand University Hospital
