København S

We are seeking a motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher to contribute to a project investigating the clinical effectiveness and safety of novel heart failure treatments. The position is available for a period of two years and will be funded by external research grants.

About the Department of Epidemiology Research
The Department of Epidemiology Research is a vibrant hub of 35 diverse professionals, including medical doctors, statisticians, bioinformaticians, data scientists, biologists, public health scientists, and mathematical modelers. Together, we foster a collaborative and supportive environment, where diverse perspectives come together to unravel the complexities of health and disease. Some of our research interests are infectious diseases, vaccines, pregnancy, mental health, sexual health, genetics and drugs used for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Statens Serum Institut is located close to the center of Copenhagen, consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the world.

The project
Heart failure is one of the most common and costly conditions encountered in clinical practice. In recent years, several new treatments for heart failure have emerged, including sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). Initially developed for type 2 diabetes, clinical trials have demonstrated that SGLT2i also reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and worsening of heart failure, irrespective of whether patients have diabetes. In this project, our goal is to investigate the clinical effectiveness and safety of SGLT2i and other novel drugs for heart failure in routine clinical practice using state-of-the-art pharmacoepidemiology. As part of the objectives, we will investigate factors that influence different patient responses and explore how treatment can be optimized in different patient subgroups. These analyses will utilize advanced data science methods, leveraging information from biomarkers and other key clinical characteristics.

The position
The successful candidate will be responsible for driving individual parts and individual studies within the overall project, including data analysis, authoring and co-authoring manuscripts for high-impact scientific journals, and presenting the work at conferences. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof. Anders Hviid, Head of the Department, with input from Dr. Henrik Svanström, Senior Researcher in pharmacoepidemiology. Alongside the specific project, the postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work with other data collections and to develop new research ideas. The position also involves identifying sources of funding and contributing to the process of securing funds.

Your education, experience and qualifications
We expect you to be an independent, creative, and ambitious scientist with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Epidemiology, Statistics, Data science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field
  • Strong statistical and data science skills
  • A high level of proficiency in English, both oral and written
  • A high level of proficiency in either SAS or R/Python
  • An attention to detail and a drive for rigor
  • A strong scientific track record
  • Experience of working with large healthcare databases, such as the Nordic healthcare registers

Career advancement
At SSI, we firmly believe in fostering the growth and development of our colleagues. You will enjoy continuous opportunities to refine your skills, expand your knowledge, and contribute meaningfully to our department's success. We offer good opportunities to further your scientific career in a strong research environment with exceptional data from Danish health registers and large biobanks. We emphasize collaboration between researchers and value a positive working environment.

Terms of employment
You will be hired as a postdoctoral fellow for a 2-year period, with the possibility of extension of the employment.

Employment will be in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and Akademikerne/AC and the Danish Ministry of Taxation’s circular concerning the job structure for scientific staff working with research at sector research institutions (Stillingsstruktur for videnskabeligt personale med forskningsopgaver ved sektorforskningsinstitutioner).
