Odense M

A full-time position as professor in translational pharmacology is vacant at the Research Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy, and Environmental Health, Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU)

The academic position

The position will be within translational pharmacology. This is to be understood in its broadest meaning such as translating basic discoveries in pharmacology into new treatments in clinical practice and/or understanding molecular mechanisms of clinical observations (reverse translation).

Areas of responsibility

The professor will be responsible for initiating, supervising, and publishing research in the field of translational pharmacology. The professor will also be responsible for developing new strategies for collaboration with other key stakeholders in the areas of pharmacology, pharmacy, and environmental medicine. Furthermore, the professor will be expected to be the daily leader of the research group in translational pharmacology and will also be expected to contribute to pharmacology teaching for pharmacy, medical, biomedical, and other students at the highest international level.

Additionally, the professor must teach and mentor postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, as well as maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Participation in assessment work and other faculty duties will be part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task.

Research activity, network, and collaboration

The professor will be expected to contribute to the further development of the research strategy and profile of the research unit with special emphasis on translational pharmacology. The professor will be expected to increase the research activity and to establish local collaboration with other researchers at SDU and Odense University Hospital (OUH). Finally, it will be expected that the professor participates in furthering scientific development of the fields both nationally and internationally.

The Research Unit

The Research Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine has approximately 45 employees: 5 full professors, 6 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, 2 postdocs, 12-15 PhD students, approximately 15 technical and administrative staff. It consists of three closely collaborating and cohabiting research groups: pharmacoepidemiology, translational pharmacology, and environmental medicine. Additionally, it collaborates with pharmacology at Odense University Hospital. Collectively, it is Denmark’s largest center for research, teaching, and clinical service in pharmacology.

The research unit teaches at four academic educations: Medicine, Pharmacy, Chiropractor and Biomedicine. It produces approximately 100 international peer-reviewed publications per year.

The translational research group conducts basic and applied research aimed at understanding variability in drug response and toxicity. It currently consists of one associate professor, one postdoc, eight PhD students, 4 research master students, two lab technicians and one chemist.

Present strategic research areas are:

  • Understanding the impact of type 2 diabetes on drug metabolism and drug transport.
  • Elucidating the role of dicloxacillin and flucloxacillin in drug-drug interactions.
  • Exploring mechanisms and biomarkers of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

These research areas are addressed by utilizing state-of-the-art human cell models of liver and the peripheral nervous system. These cells are studied using LC-HRMS or LC-MS/MS (both small molecule and proteomics), automated fluorescence microscopy, qPCR and single cell RNA sequencing. In vitro findings are translated to clinical impact by clinical trials also carried out within the group. Finally, population-impact is assessed using register-based studies in close collaboration with the pharmacoepidemiology group.

The Department of Public Health comprises 7 research units in Odense and Esbjerg
