Odense M

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD position in mechanical engineering located in Odense, Denmark with a preferred starting date of March 1st, 2024, or soon thereafter.

The PhD position is partly funded by SDU Maritime Research Platform, established on a donation from A/S Dampskibsselskabet Orient’s Fond.

The PhD candidate will work actively under SDU Maritime Research Platform, which consists of maritime research projects in four faculties across the University of Southern Denmark, mostly PhD and postdoc projects. All work packages in the project are related to the maritime sector with a special focus at the offshore industry. The topics cover a wide range of disciplines as e.g., sustainability, safety, risk, human factors, history, logistics, business, regulation, naval architecture, and maritime operations. All partners connected to the platform must be willing to be part of the interdisciplinary network and actively participate in knowledge sharing.

About the PhD project

The aim of the PhD project is to develop a system for improving the comfort of crew and passengers on board ships. The project will address the problem of seasickness and will be focused on the development of a tool that can estimate and predict the probability of seasickness for given weather forecast and operational conditions of the vessel.

Seasickness has not been considered as a large problem, but as of late it has increased due to the dramatically growing offshore wind industry, where technicians are needed for maintenance work. They are transported by smaller crew transfer vessels from shore to the wind farm. The transportation time is short, and technicians do not have enough time to adapt to the motion. The planning for seasick avoidance on board these vessels depend today heavily on rule-of-thumb, where decisions made on whether to sail or not, are based on local experience and maybe a given sea wave threshold. There is a need for a tool, that can estimate and predict the probability for seasickness for a given weather forecast. The tool should be designed to suggest changes to the sailing e.g., course or speed changes that will reduce the probability of seasickness or possibly eliminate it and thereby increase the crew comfort. Motion and vibration of the vessels play a role for crew safety and for the work environment on board. How does motion and vibrations influence the daily work on board – and can better ways of operating the vessel be identified. Focus on safety, risk and the work environment are very important in this sector. The project will be performed in close connection with a PhD student employed at the Faculty of Health, SDU.

About the candidate

We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and ambitious student with a good command of English (written and spoken) who can work independently as part of a team. The candidate should have a master’s degree in engineering, preferably in mechanical engineering or naval architecture and a genuine interest in interdisciplinary research. The candidate should have experience on data science and machine learning.

The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate his/her ambition to conduct high-quality research, present the results at international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We expect the candidate to take part in the teaching activities of the section SDU Mechanical Engineering.

Research environment
SDU offers an interdisciplinary research environment with other PhD students where research programs are developed in close collaboration with industry.
