My name is Christian Theill Nielsen and I’m looking for the next person to join my team. If you would love to define our commercial approach to drive exponential growth for a product with a multibillion-dollar top line, then this is the role for you!

Have you ever wondered about the journey of your IKEA furniture, Samsung TV, or pair of Nike before it entered your home? Well, being one of the world’s largest logistics companies, it probably has been on one of our ships, planes, trucks or through one of our warehouses at some point. We probably also shipped the raw materials into the production.

In essence, we integrate the world. And a more integrated world improves life quality and prosperity for all. For more than a century, we have been a leader within shipping logistics. However, we think we can do better and integrate even more. A few years ago, we made the decision to double down on delivering an exceptional end-to-end experience for our customers throughout their entire supply chain. This led to an expansion of our landside transportation business.

That’s where my team comes in. We’re globally responsible for continuing to exponentially grow our transportation over land, which is already yielding revenue around 6bn USD. This is via truck you see on the road, the train you see on the railway, or the barge you see on the river. To do that, we have gathered a fantastic team of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. But we need one more. One who can drive our growth in the part we call Middle Mile. In short, we define Middle Mile as all landside transportation where the cargo is not in a shipping container or last mile parcel delivery to consumers.

Key responsibilities

Your formal title will be Senior Growth Manager, Middle Mile. The background for this role is that we have created a large middle mile landside transportation business, primarily through acquisitions* and supplemented by small organic growth. Time is now mature to start creating more structure around our commercial approach, i.e., combining the best practices from the acquired businesses with the Maersk capabilities to create a profitable growth engine.

You will have high autonomy to define your own role – however, to get you started, I’ve thought about the following outcomes as a way to structure it:

Go to market strategy

  • Full understanding of customer needs, buying processes, etc. and optimally prioritized value propositions towards these, ideally integrated with other Maersk products (e.g., warehousing)

  • Right prioritization of customer segments and geographies

  • Clear view on ambitious short-, mid-, and long-term growth targets?


Capabilities

  • Right capabilities in the Product organization to optimally support the Sales organization throughout the sales process from lead generation to contract closure


Operating system and performance management

  • Good and collaborative engagement model across between functions as well as between HQ and Frontline?

  • Continuous understanding of whether we’re winning or losing through the right metrics

  • Solid action plans where we deviate from planned growth

There are no formal background requirements and the ideal candidate can come from anywhere – examples of backgrounds that could work well are

  • Road logistics industry with both commercial and global responsibility

  • Commercial excellence or similar in a large global company

  • Strategy or management consulting roles with projects within logistics, supply chain, and/or commercial excellence
